Here's a quick and simple crochet ribbed beanie tutorial suitable for all crochet levels! With the usual ribbed beanie patterns, I've always felt that it would turn out too thick and bumpy at the top. This one is slightly more advanced than other ribbed beanie tutorials to keep the top of the beanie from bunching when gathering and sewing up the top. However, this pattern is still easy because it's repetitive and uses basic stitches.

Project Level:
This is a great first project because it uses very basic stitches that all beginners would know! The only catch is that it is worked mainly in the back loops only (BLO) to give it that ribbed effect. The stitching method I used is the slip stitching method, but hand sewing is also a great alternative!

Stitches:
Slip Knot (sk)
Chain (ch)
Half Double Crochet (hdc) in the Back Loop Only (BLO)
Slip Stitch (sl st) in the Back Loop Only (BLO)

Gauge:
18 hdc - 11 rows = 4 in / 10 cm

Dimensions:
52 cm/20.5" circumference x 26 cm/10.25" wide

Tips:
- Measure your head and decide the size of your hat before starting
- Account for the stretchiness of the ribbing (make it slightly smaller than your actual head size)
- The chain 1 at the beginning of each row does NOT count as a stitch
- Pull your loose ends to the inside of the hat and weave them in (or leave them hanging!)

Thanks for watching!

My wife, who is a beginner in crochet, just finished this beanie.
It turned out great.
She had problems with the tightness of the five slip stitches at the start.
She said she just kept them as loose as possible and if they were too tight, she used a hairpin to lift it and insert the hook.
The top is not bulky and looks good.
We're both proud of her accomplishment.
Thank you Viv!

For anyone struggling with the slip stitches, don't make the loops too tight. Keep it a bit looser than your half double crochets so that the hook can slip under smoothly when you're doing the next row.

I have now made four beanies using this tutorial and pattern and just have to say this is hands down my favorite thing lately. I’m still fairly new to crocheting but the fact that I can make this design in two days or less makes me feel so accomplished and satisfied in my work and progress! Thank you for making this, you’ve helped me and so many others! 🫶🏻

I’m a beginner crocheter and I’ve wanted to make some cute stuff to make for gifts, and this is the best tutorial for beginners I’ve found so far! Such a cute beanie and simple to make.

I love this pattern! I used this video to essentially teach myself to crochet and ive made four beanies that im super happy with.
What i learned that id pass on for others is that if your slip stitches are super tight you need to make them COMICALLY looser. Like ridiculously loose it feels silly. THEY WILL TIGHTEN UP!! bc omg i was fighting for my life for a while there .

Im currently working on your lemon peel cardigan pattern and having a blast !! So excited for the results

Great tutorial, slow enough for beginners, showing the loops and where to put the hook 10/10 🤗

This is now my go-to pattern for making hats for donations. I dropped off a dozen in different sizes to my local food pantry/clothing closet yesterday. I Googled "child's size crochet hat circumference" and found a chart that shows different circumference and height measurements. Thanks so much for this tutorial!!

I love this tutorial! Finished my 3rd beanie using this. I did two beanies using 2 colours and the 3rd one using four colours. If anyone else wants to try the color switch has to be on the slip stitch end fyi for it to look seamless.

I have to admit this. I've been through numerous tutorials, but yours hands down is just the best tutorial out there for beginners and even for crocheters... Your explanation is quite helpful and we can learn things so easily, thank you so much, I genuinely appreciate you a lot as my crochet teacher.

Thank you. I've been trying to find cool crochet clothes that aren't too showy and I figured out how to do this with my left hand. I'm able to crochet fast with my right hand but I need to use my left hand more so making a few of these will help.

I really like this pattern! It's easy and the ribbing makes it look more professional. These were the straightest seams and rows I've ever done!
