I finally get my U6 Enterprise access point connected to a 2.5G network connection using the brand new Unifi Switch Flex 2.5G PoE. Apparently you can power it with PoE+++?

PoE ++ is IEEE 802.3bt type 3, and unifi is calling IEEE 802.3bt type 4 PoE+++, and others are falling in line with them

You asked about layer 2 vs layer 3, in super simple terms layer 2 switches know about VLAN tags and can therefore send/switch traffic to the port which has an associated VLAN configured, or add a VLAN tag if configured to do so. At layer 3 packets contain headers & trailers which contain information about where the packet is going to/from so a layer 3 switch can do routing of packets between TCP/IP networks. This can be useful in an enterprise network for offloading routing load (CPU/memory) and traffic from a router, e.g. if you had three buildings in a campus and each building had a server room and each floor was a separate TCP/IP network, rather than traffic destined for a server in the server room going over the single link back to the one campus router and then back over the same link to the switch to be directed out another port/VLAN of a layer 2 switch, that packet would be handled by a Layer 3 edge switch in each building keeping the traffic local to the building if you like. Layer 3 also supports QoS so you could configure a switch port that has say a video camera connected to add QoS information for prioritising the packet as it is routed to it’s destination.

That 36W available power is what is "left over" what that switch itself uses... That switch is powered from that POE++ source. When you connect more clients, that max will drop, because switch uses more power itself...

Comrade, you’re not going to reach 50k with communism era cables like that.

Ubiquiti actually has a couple of switches coming out that provide PoE+++ output. The Enterprise Campus 24 & 48 PoE with 1200W and 2400W power supplies respectively! Specs are on their US website at least.

I would have love to see a WiFi performance test before and after the switch installation to see the advantage of the 2.5 speed.

I have been following you for some time now and was wondering if there was a Danish connection. and yep, I spotted it on your sons t-shirt. Cheers from Langeland

I was an idiot and didn’t realize there’s no power supply that comes with this unit. Then found the power brick that’s $70 is just as large as the unit.

I opted for a 10g POE+ injector for the time being(I have no cameras etc, only 2 AP).

Management of the poe power budget is the overall reason for the poe +++ ref. Chris of Crosstalk Solution did a Video on the subject

Hej Lars..
Love your videos.
Couldn't help to read the text on the t-shirt of your son. And the flag on it.
What is your relationship with Denmark?

I would love to see you install fibre to your out buildings! You have the perfect setup for it!

Hey Lars, I think that one RJ-45 end needs to be re-crimped.

PoE +++ is not an official standard, I believe Ubiquiti coined it and some other manufacturers are now also starting to use the naming. It's basically PoE++ with 90 or 100W per port. It's useful for things like smart lighting, LED ceiling tiles and such.

Du är som jag. Bara testa tills det fungerar. Then i love that you picked up the aussie accent so well. I'll guess you lived there 25+ years

Another very imformative video. The one takeaway I have from this is the comment regarding the UISP devices and Unbiquti devices not all showing up. Never realised that was a thing. Almost wish you did an entire video on some of the things they don't do so great. Have also been putting it off but now I need to replace my home network and am ready to order some UI stuff. Assume there is no affiliate link in AU that I can use?
