BIGGEST Sharks Ever!

Показать описание
There are over 450 species of shark swimming in our oceans at the moment and these predators are near the top of the food chain. As humans, we take the lives of more than 100 million sharks every year, which is having devastating effects on the oceans eco-system, in comparison, sharks are responsible for a mere 37 a year, on average. Today we’re going to have a look at some of the biggest sharks currently and throughout history and some record-breaking ones too!

12 - Speed demon…
Blue Sharks are among the fastest sharks in the world and have the ability to leap out of the water too! Their exact speed is unknown, some say up to 60 mph while others 22 mph!
11 - Stomach That…
Sharks have been found with the weirdest items in their stomachs over the years, including shoes, drums, boxes of nails, bottle of wine, chairs and even the rear half of a horse. Sad to think about, isn’t it?
10 - And the winner is…
If there was a category for longest tail, it would definitely go to the thresher shark! We mentioned this lengthy beast earlier, and it turns out that their tails account for 52% of their body size. They use their tails as weapons and the moment they spot a school of fish, they whip their tails around, stunning the fish and then eating them. Sadly, their tails are also a curse, as of all the sharks, these guys get trapped in nets the most.
9 - At length…
One of the largest sharks around today is the Basking shark that can reach lengths of 40-feet. This filter feeder is found in more temperate water and feeds off plankton. Their weight is in the region of 19 tons and they like to cruise through the oceans at a mild pace, taking in plankton as they go along.
8 - Just call me Nicole…
Named Nicole – after Nicole Kidman – a great white shark was recorded as undertaking a 12,400-mile journey. She swam across the Indian Ocean twice, from South Africa through to Australia and back again. She was tagged and recorded and researchers were also able to learn that she swam on average 3 mph, making hers the “fastest sustained long-distance speed recorded for a shark migration.”
7 - Snack attack…
You’ll be relieved to know that in 2017, it was a pretty average year for shark attacks. There were 88 reports of shark attacks with only 5 fatalities. Statistically, you have a 1 in 3.7 million chance of losing your life to a shark. Bees and lightning strikes should be more of a worry factor for you.
6 - All creatures great and small…
This may be the smallest shark out in the ocean, dubbed the pocket shark due to a little pocked located on the shark’s pectoral fin… and if you’re wondering, yes, the shark could probably fit in your pocket! They were discovered in 2010 around 190-miles off the coast of Louisiana. They measure roughly 5-inches long and eat fish and other marine life.
5 - From smallest to biggest…
We can’t have a list of biggest sharks without mentioning the impressive whale shark which reaches 41.5-feet! They are found in tropical waters around the equator and can weigh up to 21.5 tons! Like the basking shark, they also live off plankton but occasionally they feast on small fish. It’s a bit uncertain as to how long they can live for. Some believe up to 150-years, but that hasn’t been confirmed as yet.
4 - Grab a bite…
While we’re on the topic of large, did you know that the Great White has the largest teeth of any living shark species at the moment? Their mouth is home to 300 huge, triangular teeth measuring between 2 and 2.5-inches long. They come standard with serrated edges, perfect for ripping through flesh. Taking all the sharks into account, the Megalodon wins hands down, as their teeth could reach up to 7-inches as seen in fossils of monster!
3 - Not good enough to eat…
When it comes to food, most sharks are not too fussy, however, there is one fish that they won’t touch and that’s because eating it could prove to be a rather disastrous experience for the shark. It’s the Moses sole and just one bite and the fish will release a chemical that causes the sharks jaw to freeze.
2 - Bun in the oven…
Pregnancies differ quite vastly for sharks too, for example, the bonnet head shark gives birth to live pups after just 4.5 months. The pups hatch from eggs kept inside the mom’s womb, and she has between 8 and 9 at a time. Other sharks don’t have it so lightly, for example, the spiny dogfish is pregnant for an astounding 2-years! Research is being done now to determine the length of time a frilly shark is pregnant for, with some believing it could be as much as 3.5-years!
