Honestly this story isn't scary but I saw it more hopeful and poetic for lovecraft. The man longs for more in life and to escape the dullness of the waking world (possibly the man is lovecraft) the man wants to know what happened to the dreams of humanity. He dreams at night of other planets and is taken to beautiful places in his dreams.
