Other than yogsothoth, azathoth is my favorite being the chief of the outer gods. He is one of the creatures in cosmic horror that inspire my work as an artist and a writer. I'm so happy that hp lovercraft left his concept of cosmic horror open to interpretation. It gives me hope I can pick up the mantle of a cosmic horror writer in my own right.

I like to think that Lovecraft invented Azathoth as a counter to all forms of organised religion, not just Christianity but Islam, Buddhism, ancient Greek/Roman, Norse, Cimmerian or any other, where those religions place an entity of higher power as the creator, and that the universe is based on their intelligent design.
I like to think he created Azathoth to take a swing at these faiths, suggesting that there is no intelligent design, that the universe is indifferent, thoughtless and chaotic, and that we are simply trying to place reason into something we do not wish to accept as beyond our scope of understanding.

It was brave for anyone back then to even suggest the universe was anything but intellectual design.

Fun fact: Azathoth doesn't dream reality. Not once in any of Lovecrafts stories does it ever say that Azathoth dreams reality. There is even a story of a time traveler who journeys to future earth where Azathoth is awake and one shots earth the old fashioned way. All the while the gods of mythology are running away in terror.

You must point out that this is just ONE version, but there are many others. Lovecraft himself wrote about a story of the destruction of a higher being than Azathoth, a story wich finally drove Abdul Alhazred insane. There's also a story were Azathoth got punished and locked into the center of the cosmos, sewered from his soul Nyarlathothep and kept leashed through the music.
And then there's the story in wich the gods of order created Azathoth and his kin as slaves to work for them, but the demons broke free and flet to the cosmos we are in.

If I remember correctly, the biggest "secret" of the mythos is that everything is simply the dream of azathoth, and one of the reasons he's considered the blind idiot god is because he is totally unaware of anything in this dream.
It also means that he is the most powerful of the gods as everything including concepts are just fragments of it's imagination.
Narlethotep is one of the most dangerous gods because it seems that it's goal is to wake Azathoth.
The other gods are all aware that the only reason they exist is because Azathoth continues to sleep, and that if he wakes they too will cease to be.

The sheer existential dread this thing conveys is something I've loved for years. There is of course the "everything is a simulation." crowd. But what about the "We are merely the dream of an elder and unknowable horror beyond our comprehension, and should he wake, everything ceases to exist." crowd? That is truly horrific in its own way, no?

Canonically Azathoth isn’t dreaming everything in the universe if you follow Lovecraft only. The dream thing was brought by another author that was inspired by an African god that actually does that
