“Private island” is quite different than “forbidden to humans”.

As someone born and raised on Oahu, it saddens me to see how much our island landscape has changed. I can only imagine how untouched and beautiful Niihau is like old Hawaii.

Nothing to hide. No conspiracy. And the last population that speaks Olelo Kanaka. Which needs to be preserved.

You can live on Niihau if you marry a Hawaiian resident. Niihau, also known as the Forbidden Isle, is privately owned by the Robinson family and is off-limits to outsiders. Only the following people are allowed on the island:
* Residents of Niihau
* Members of the Robinson family
* Invited guests
* Government officials
* US Navy personnel
* Non-Hawaiians married to a resident

I can respect the Robinsons for not succumbing to greed and keeping the land and its inhabitants and culture preserved

It's no secret natives who left the island have been very clear the family wanted to preserve Hawaiian culture. They wanted to preserve the indigenous people and culture.

Respect to the Robinsons for not running off the natives. They also cared enough to preserve the integrity of the island by not making it a tourist attraction/destination.

I once met a lady who grew up there, she was excited to tell me all about her childhood. She said most tourists don't care about actually getting to know her and her family. She told me stories about catching fish and avoiding eels off the reef as a kid. She moved to Kauai to find work, I hope she's doing well!

I met Mr Robinson a few years ago on his property in Kauai, he is quite determined to preserve even the indigenous flora and fauna. He spends a lot of time relocating endangered plants and cares for them daily as well as trying to keep the invasive goats away. We didn't talk about the island, instead we chatted about a diverse array of topics from old rifles to sailing. He really is a nice and authentic guy.

As a Hawaiian I can say that they are not hiding anything. They only have their island “private” to stop tourism or any sort of building whatsoever that’ll destroy the beautiful island. It’s a very beautiful place that never got tampered with.

$350, 000 for an island that size is actually insane, that’s so cheap.

I was fortunate to visit there last year when a friend of mine—who's native Hawaiian-- was invited by her great grandmother for a special occasion. She was supposed to go with her sister, but since she was busy finalizing her thesis, my friend told me to just take her place. The island is so beautiful and is teeming with diverse flora and fauna. It feels like traveling back in time because the air there is fresh, the surroundings are green, and the native people are very friendly. The feeling of being connected with nature is so euphoric it made me relax emotionally, physically, and mentally, too.

My neighbours lawn is restricted to all tourists, this is because it’s a private property.

I’ve been to Niihau by invitation. The Robinsons, for owning the island, are tasked with taking care of the Kānaka Maoli who live there in perpetuity. They can come and go as they please but travel is only possible by either boat or helicopter. And mostly it’s done by a very slow boat. people are not allowed to go there the same way that you would not allow everyone to simply walk into your house uninvited. It’s private land. And the Robinsons go to great lengths to protect the Kānaka Maoli of Niihau.

“Forbidden to humans” seconds later, “84 people live there”

Privacy. People cannot stand it when you are private.

This is not because the family wants to keep a private island, this is because the family promised kamehameha that they would keep the culture there due to the colonization from Europeans, that’s why only natives were allowed to stay, Hawaiian culture thrives there, that’s why it’s private, so it doesn’t become a Disney world like Oahu has.

Edit: hello everyone tysm for the likes, this information most likely isn't correct, if you want to get a better understanding of Hawaiian culture please do. I wrote this comment without any research only from the top of my head, so there are many errors, adding on to that, thanks for those who corrected me in the replies. I just wanted to clarify all that. Please if you want to learn more about this topic, do research. Aloha🌺

I heard "A family from Scotland bought the Island" and did NOT expect it to be followed by "...and the Natives were allowed to stay.". A very positive surprise!
