One night in Vietnam a bunch of us young lieutenants had bottles of Mogen David Concord Grape wine we’d bought that afternoon at the 101st Airborne PX liquor store in Phu Bai. One of the guys had a record player and exactly one 45 rpm record. We crowded into his hootch (plywood hut). We sang along to Sam Cook’s Chain Gang for about 2 hours until the wine ran out. What a great time we had!

RIP Uncle Sam. Died too young 😢 the world didn't appreciate your protest songs. The true heartbeat of the Civil Rights Movement 👊🏿!

I met him several times, which ages me! He was a friend of my father's and they worked together (we are in the music industry). From what I remember, Sam was one of the nicest, kindest and talented person and his passing was a tremendous loss.

I hear this song and it makes me miss my old man. Sam Cooke was always on that old cassette player in the garage. It takes me back to being 10 years old, “helping” him working on cars. I’m sure I was more in the way than anything, but he put up with me. Memories that kinda break your heart once somebody’s gone, you know.

I've always liked Sam Cook's music. This song has a special meaning. I was on the chain gang for about 12 years. Every word he says in the lyrics hits me like a sledge hammer. 12 long years. Never thought I'd make it out alive.

29 years old, know this song word by word. No cursing, no violence. Just pure black soul, what we really need to get back to.

My bf played Sam’s greatest hits album and I felt like a kid again. This music was in the background of my childhood.
I fell in love with him a little more that night ♥️

Blows me away..so haunting, so sad, so beautiful .. Powerful lyrics You hear them moaning their lives away..."I'm going home one of these days, I'm going home, see my woman whom I love so dear, but meanwhile I got to work right here...dayum

This man was truly a visionary and some of the songs he sang and wrote are truly prophetic. His death was so untimely and unjustified. He will live forever through his music.
