As someone who's been a Pistons fan since the 1980s and watched what this man did to Andre Drummond for years I can say with confidence that it IS NOT that Joel Embiid baits fouls but his constant pretending that he just got murdered when fouled especially when his team is up big. That is the reason why people hate him.

in my opinion foul baiting is literally any time a player’s only goal on a move is to draw a foul, it’s definitely a part of the game but it becomes annoying when it’s 80% of a player’s game

A part of the Embiid hate is dissatisfaction with the state of officiating. The level of protection on driving players is pretty ridiculous, and Embiid is completely ok with exploiting that for all its worth. If the league stops granting fouls for those who drive into their defender and then flail, Embiid will become a much more satisfying player to watch.

I understand that these are fouls but my biggest problem is how soft they are, like the type of fouls that go as no calls constantly because it’s so small, but for embiid he gets the call at a disproportionate rate

I think it’d be value for this discussion to analyze the fouls Giannis drew and make the comparison

A contact against a moving defender is not always a foul. Its about if the defender moves towards the offensive player, about angles, how far the arms are out and about the area of contact. A contact shoulder vs. chest is just a foul if the defender moves forward, not even if he moves sidewards. If the defender is not perfectly straight its not always a foul. The defender is allowed to lean forward very slidely (I think it was 15° angle). The defender must try to be straight. If the defender squads to jump, its also an allowed natural movement. If the defender tries to adsorb contact with one arm attached to chest in the post, its not a foul. Even if the shooter makes contact to the shooting arm. Also you can have both arms in front of you like elbow wide. If the denfeders arms are in that position before the shooter starts his motion it is not a foul! Thats what I remember a few years ago. Also we were teached not to call And-1s as long as the foul was not creating too much impact!

Should be a “hard foul” category. I feel that a large part of this discussion is that most of Joel’s fouls, are fouls according to NBA rules, but are weak.

That foul at 13:00 on capela - if this is a foul everyone can just move the ball to the side and go up to initiate contact..

Thank you for highlighting the fact that Joel Embiid GETS FOULED. People seem to forget this when they argue against him

12:50 the fact that its debatable if that’s a foul or not shows the state of basketball we have. love kenny but a lot of these fouls he says its real they are not. maybe a call that just a superstar would get but not a role player but not a REAL FOUL

I like how Chet Holmgren put it on PG's podcast: if we played by the book there'd be a foul every time up the floor
