When a child comes into your life, it is time to relearn your life, not teach them your ways

I agree. I'm glad I had Knex when I was a kid. We'd build all types of fun crazy shit. Where as Lego was always seen as a toy where you have to do it all to make it.

There's no point buying the fancy kits if you have a child who wants to do their own thing.

Building your own things is kinda what Lego is all about and it's so important for their creativity

There should be a middle ground here. Kids do need to learn rule-based play, as it teaches them important lessons on how to work within constraints. But the other extreme inhibits their ability to think outside those constraints and creatively solve problems.

In this example, a good balance would be to allow unused pieces to be used creatively, but to build the actual model according to the instructions. If the creative building makes it harder to find the pieces needed for the main build, use this as a learning opportunity on how to be creative in a way that helps instead of hinders the overall goal. Maybe keep track of what's been used in the creative build, or look a few steps ahead and find those pieces ahead of time. Let them come up with a good solution. These are skills that will help them when they encounter larger problems as they get older and become adults.

Um, you weren't playing. You were building with instructions.

As a test of your strength halfway through the build let your kids take it into the garden to play with it

Thats exactly what we all humas came here to do. Come and experience this whole life. God doesnt judge. He knows its his creation. If he didnt want one thing to happen, he'd never created it in the first place. Thank you for this beautiful message. This is what I've always known.

Be inquisitive. "Oh, what are you making?"
