The Ferrari 2014 F14T had everything. Very much understeer, a bit understeer, neutral , a bit oversteer, lots of oversteer . What a great car ! So alonso had it all 😂👍

Simply put: if your car doesn’t have oversteer or understeer, drive faster.
The faster you go, the more one will happen.
The place on the chart shows how much a driver can handle of either.
Max and Alonso are on the extremes, they are also very fast drivers.

The Oversteer vs Understeer dichotomy has a lot to do in race vs quali setups tho. It's really difficult to drive an oversteery car fast and not burning rear tyres, F1 cars eat those tyres due to cornering + traction events. This is what amazes me most from Max, the ability to mantain tyre life with oversteer, and it has a lot to do with his short corner approach and not needing late and hard braking to drive fast, which can overheat tyres. Leclerc hasn´t reached that level yet . A lot of drivers like Schumi or Hamilton had to reduce their oversteery approach because it was just bad for a race distance. Alonso, apart from personal preference, knows really well how understeer can help him over a race distance specially in the latest part of the stints. He fights a lot the car in quali and still gets the job done reeeeally well, but his car will (normally) perform way better on the race.

Danny Ric is quoted as saying Hulkenberg and Max both have very similar ways of setting up the car and driving styles which goes against what Palmer suggests here. The Haas lacked rear downforce last year which Nico could use to his advantage over 1 lap as we often saw.

You could have put a simple animation of how the car spins to one side or to another depending on the understeer or oversteer and It would have become 10 times easier to understand.

there is probably some correlation to drivers preference with as to when they started thier career. Alsonso, Hamiltion and hulkenberg are, if im not mistaken, the 3 oldest drivers on the grid and was used as examples for understeer
