I learned the hard way... oversteer is when the back end of the car hits the tree first, understeer is when the front of the car hits the tree first

To anyone wondering why this happens, when you are on throttle, the front of the car lifts and more weight is placed on the rear of the car. This weight shift causes understeer. When you lift off of the throttle, the front of the car dips down, causing the rear of the car to suddenly go lightweight in the middle of a corner, inducing a large amount of oversteer.

Lift-off understeer is why so many Astra GTEs and 205 GTis ended up in ditches back in the day.

Lift-off oversteer can be a terrifying thing, even when you do expect it from the car you drive. Glad you managed to save it though.

yep! I was in the back seat of my buddy's father's Taurus when he went into a corner way too fast, lifted off the throttle and the back swung around. We ended up in the ditch, up-side-down covered in broken glass, but otherwise everybody was ok. Oops!

I remember doing that in my first car, and was heading towards a lamppost. My GTA skills came in and I saved it. I shit myself a bit, but I kinda wanted to do it again, I'm not that dumb so didn't try and replicate it. 😂😂

Oh the memories. I had the same car, but 1.3 and it happened to me twice in 3 years of driving. This car is easier to recover than most cars thankfully.

Liftoff oversteer is one of my favourite thing in a fwd car during winter.

Happened to me in a wet roundabout with my grandmas car... pulled the best Fwd drift ever without expecting it. People from the outside probably thought I was a dumbass drifto kid... but the thruth is that wasn't wanted.
Edit: it was in the wet and car went a good 60 degrees sideway. 2002 ford fiesta xD

And that, kiddos, is why you go into a turn at less than the full speed you could take it at, and accelerate through and out of it.

I tried it as soon as I started driving on my own after getting my driver's license. It's the best feeling in the world and now I do it round every roundabout and every turn when there's no traffic.

the smoother with your inputs the better no matter the situation

The fact you solved that with only steering means you got a good sense for that. Slamming the sh*t out of the throttle works great too. Depending on your car.
And good on you for not braking in fear that's what gets most people into the shrubs.

Happened to me when i was going into the entrance of my families ranch. Was coming in prettty hot on a downhill, had to turn 90 degress to the entrace. There was lose dirt, rear slipped and was about to hit the gate post. Floored it because it was FWD. Straightened the car immediately. I honestly dont know how the car found grip but it did.

this is exactly how i crashed. came around a corner on a dirtroad a little too hot, let off and just lost it, honestly if i would of just kept in it I never would of gone off the road. lessons learned though.

Your reaction was good and you controlled it. Yep, it's a guaranteed symptom of any front wheel drive vehicle, but is marginal less in 4wd, (though off roaders are notoriously unbalanced) and least in rwd. But you can get it in any vehicle, except perhaps one with full length caterpillar tracks! 😁
