Today we are going to discuss how architecture influences behavior? Our environment impacts us, way more than we give it credit for. It is nothing but an extension of our nervous system.

Collin Ellard, a researcher in the University of Waterloo, Canada studies the psychological impact of the city design. One of Ellard’s most consistent findings is that people are strongly affected by building façades.

Sociologist William Whyte, once advised urban planners to arrange objects and artifacts in public spaces in ways that nudged people physically closer together so that they would likely talk to each other, a process he called “triangulation", an important aspect of architecture psychology.

Conscious cities is a concept which proposes that we replace the focus on efficiency in the built environment with a focus on health and well being. One of the major themes of Conscious Cities is to bridge neuroscience, architecture and technology.

I love that more people talk about the relationship between architecture and psychology. The more people talk about this, the more we normalise urban beauty as a human necessity and not a nice to have.

Agreed with you. I however thought that the car vs transit argument was weak. Car culture is actually one of the most lonely, unproductive forms of transport we have. Some say the loneliness epidemic began with prioritizing the car. You talked about how human interaction is important for wellness and that is why transit scores higher in user satisfaction/ wellbeing vs driving. You also made it seem like you needed a car to access nature while multiple great cities have excellent transit into nature. The most ideal scenario would be to design our urban places to provide locals with the transport choices to best engage with our communities and natural surroundings, and that includes transit. Car design alone has proven to be a choice that has plagued our wellbeing for decades.

Very interesting. I was recently in Rome and walked among beautiful old structures, along the Appian Way, on the Palantine Hill and I was actually happier than I have been for a long time. Was it the historic significance? or the beauty of the architecture? and surroundings. Anyway, I am going back there as soon as possible.

Every video you make is perfect. I often wonder what the psychological affects there are on being surrounded by thousands of people but not knowing a single one. Evolutionary we would have never experienced such a thing. Think that’s where a lot of loneliness stems from. I can say I feel 100x more lonely walking around strangers than I do hiking in nature alone.
