Seagate Desktop Drive with Stuck Heads

This video shows you what a Seagate desktop hard drive sounds like when its heads are stuck, and explains a basic process for successful data recovery. It is not intended as a tutorial, and we don't recommend any home data recovery attempts.

Please note that this is not a client drive. While we recorded this video on a cleanflow bench, clean environment precautions that we use for actual data recovery cases were not taken.

If your drive sounds like this, stop operating it and get it to a professional. We offer free evaluations, and we're happy to answer questions. Call 1.800.237.4200 to speak with us.

I've been trying to repair this hard drive for hours. It wasn't until you said that these Seagate hard drives had the resting position NEAR THE CENTER that it clicked me. I've been trying to pull it AWAY from the center like with other brands. You're a life saver.

Show, don't tell! How hard would it have been to show us how to do it?

Thanks for the video, but I really wish you would have shown moving the head back to it's resting place. I rotated the platter and got the head to move, but the head stops right at the edge of platter, and won't budge off of it.

please show how to "do it manually" in another video

My 2.5" HDDs are a bit old, I don't know if they have the function of having automatic parking technology only when inactive? no read/no write/park

My models are: WD10JPVX-08JC3T5 and HGST HTS541010A99E662

Auto park technology has evolved in recent years

In the reports of people I see some 2.5" HDD enclosure case USB 3.0 after being ejected in Windows 10 they remain connected and operating

Hello friend, I have a question, out of context.
I have a Seagate Barracuda ES HDD, (3 platters) but I removed the internal parts, leaving only the Motor and the Logic Board (control) because I would like to use it for a Mini Sander but, after removing just the needle assembly, the Motor does not run (before it was running normally). I've tried several ways, connecting pins 2-6 and 3-5 with a jumper, but there's no way to get it to turn. Could it be that this type of HD only works with the needle assembly in place? Please let me know if you have any tips on this; Thank you.

to get it free just spin the platter counter-clockwise with a screwdriver (never touch the platter !) and gentely slide the heads out from as close to their base as you can to not disturb the needles
