On This Episode:

Maybe you’re a single mother, or a sister, aunt or best friend of a young man in your life trying to learn how to navigate the ropes of life and you’re wondering how you can be enough for him, and if you’re enough.

There’s been a debate about whether a woman can raise a strong man or not, but today’s guest puts this argument to rest once and for all. Devon Franklin released an audible exclusive called, It Takes a Woman, to pay tribute to the love, the sacrifice and the value he and his brothers received from the women that helped raise them.

Devon Franklin is an award winning film and TV producer, former Senior VP of Production at Columbia Pictures and current president and CEO of Franklin Entertainment. The way he connects to his emotions and pain with clarity of mind is inspiring.

In this episode we’re discussing how to be okay and how to find the line where sacrifice requires more self-care to be even better for the people you love the most. There are things that only a woman can do to make things alright, but it doesn’t have to come in the form of perfection and it doesn’t need to be to your own detriment.

“We never fully come to terms with the lost that cuts us to our soul” -Devon Franklin, It Takes a Woman

QUOTES:

“There’s an expectation that women are going to do a certain thing, and as a result it isn’t always valued.” [3:55]

“My mother was a strong woman because of her vulnerability.” [5:17]

“I’m not about being selfish, but I've learned the value of self-prioritizing.” [17:48]

“As men we do tend to be selfish when it comes to what women offer us and give us, and we do tend to undervalue and take for granted what women give us.” [22:30]

“Yes, you should sacrifice, certainly there’s nothing wrong with that, yet please don’t sacrifice to the detriment of who you are.” [24:05]

“I love you enough to offer whatever advice or help or support, yet if I step in and do it for you, then I’m actually not loving you.” [28:08]

“If I find my identity in service to someone else, that to me is the equivalent of building your house on sand.” [34:20]

“A lot of things, when they hurt us, is because there’s a seed of truth in it. So our reaction is really very revelatory. How we react to certain things is a great indicator of what’s going on in here.” [42:03]

“This pain is here to teach me if I let it, and this pain is here to help me understand who I am and who I’m not…” [43:43]

“I’m a perfectionist in reform. I thought, [...] I want to get through life perfectly, and that didn’t work, so I rather get through it truthfully. It’s not going to be perfect and that’s okay as long as it’s true I can live with that.” [44:21]

“I allowed others’ perception of me to be my prison.” [50:05]

My dad died when I was 7. Nobody was there for me and my mum. My dad's family was bullying us and mum's family didn't care as well. Some people harassed my mum and told her she will never win cause she is alone against them. I knew I had to be strong and self-reliant. People who had childhood like this know how important is for woman to be independent cause life is not la la land and nobody will "save" you except of yourself.

My dad left when I was 1. My mother dragged me through one abusive relationship after another and let me be abused by many men and my cousins and siblings. My uncle stabbed and my aunt and beat her constantly as my male role model. I not only raised myself but I raised myself out of layers upon layers of abuse and neglect and still trying to find my worth in this world in my 40’s raising my own children by myself. I never let my girls be abused like my mother who sold me to old men when I was little. I left abusers but never knew how to create healthy relationship. I should probably write a book. 🤔

Thank you for the inspiration.

I'm 35 and I'm just now realizing the fact that I was emotionally neglected and "unseen" as a child caused so much turbulence within me and trickled into my relationships as well....wow

This man is exceptionally articulate. May our generation not take him for granted. Thank you Mr. Franklin for teaching us about 'the separation of tasks'. So good!

"I would say to any mother: the job is not to be everything. Cause you can't. It's a losing job to try to be everything to your children....do the best that you can & trust that the differences will get made up the way they need to." 🙌

Listening to this on Christmas Eve 2022 in Colorado- thinking how beautiful it is that a man from America who is black can have this uplifting conversation with a woman from England who is Greek, that each recognize, relate to, support, & validate the other! This is an example of the ideal that all men are brothers (& I'm a girl, speaking figuratively.)

Whether the ideal is what Christmas is all about, or what Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek is about- that all men are brothers (men, women, non-binary, white, black, human, non human from another planet) this conversation is not only educational & edifying for me, it also expresses the best ideals we fallible, striving humans are starting to reach: All men are brothers and we can each uplift each other and in turn be uplifted. Very beautiful❤ Thank you both

My dad was an alcoholic as well and died in his med forties. I was in my twenties however he was out of our lives as Minors. So much Traumas. Adult children of alcoholics have so much to overcome.

“Feeling unseen is the number one cause of divorce.” … Wow! I had to pause it right there and process that fully. This is going to take some time for me to untangle…

I appreciated this sit down so much, and I found it to be so therapeutic and relatable to my own experiences of childhood trauma !!! Me. Devon is so self aware and wise and I really appreciate the vulnerability shown and valuable lessons he shared from his own personal reflections and those of the women in his family. Best believe I’m heading down to audible/Amazon to get a copy of the audio book! This has to be my favourite Women of Impact episode and I’m so grateful 😩🙌🏾
