2 Year old Dunstan Chestnut Trees - Seedlings planted in 2017

I grew several dunstan chestnuts from seed in spring of 2017. I planted the chestnut trees in tree tubes to protect them and help them grow taller quicker. Today we are going to walk around and inspect the trees.

If I am not mistaken the American Chestnut trees grew in the tree line...this is probably why the ones you plant closer to the tree line do so well! I am so happy someone is doing something to bring these trees back! THANK YOU!

Seeing your trees and the success you've had back in 2017, gives me hope with my orchard. Thank you!

The tubes are great for animal protection but also causes the tree to be a bit weaker as it’s not open to weather !
We used to take the tubes of when the trees reached around 3 <> 4 feet and put a wire mesh round them to protect from rabbits and deer, the mesh was put round in a diameter of 3 feet to a height of 5 <> 6 feet !

Instead of using a t post, use the thinnest 1/2 inch PVC. Allows the tree some movement and it ends up being stronger and able to hold itself upright

i'm in Australia, so none of that dreadful blight i don't think. Three years ago I got a Bouche de Betizac grafted chestnut tree which is going alright, plus I grew two trees from nuts I purchased at a market. They have become really beautiful young trees - lush, healthy, excellent form. Better than the glamour named variety! Good luck - I hope you can get your native chestnuts to thrive. PS If I were you I'd remove all that grass from around those young trees. Grass is a very fierce competitor for water and nutrients. Look up grass root systems - you'll be shocked..

Good content it appears you have a moisture problem you might want to consider mulching with Wood Chips

Is there a feed nutrient that you can put down on those that are struggling too help them grow? Sound like the soil need some kind of amendments to give the trees the needed food to grow. Keep on trucking your results are great so far.

I just use like four feet tall green wire fencing in a circle and use 4 tent spikes to keep it in the ground, that way it grows the same rate as your tube trees but stands on its own because its trunk is thicker

Enjoying the video. It would be helpful if you mention where you are located.

If you lay out your spots for your trees in the spring or during the summer and make 4ft. Square frame and then spray Roundup during the summer when weeds grow the spots will be free of weeds when you plant your trees in the fall. You don't have to mow so close and the trees have no competition for nutrients and water. I did that and planted 64 trees and they all have flourished. Good luck.

That's great...I've had about 60 Chestnut seeds in my refrigerator for about 3 months getting ready to plant. I thought they had to be about 50' apart because of their size. Do you plan on moving them or thinning them out? What about mulch around the base so it's not competing with the tall grass. I don't think too much of those grow tubes...The wind without it will strengthen the trunk. I think if I used a tube, I would top the tree to force strength back to the trunk. Thank you for the informative video!

Very nice chestnut orchards. I have three questions for you if you please. 1. Do you fertilize your chestnut tree? 2. Why do you allow the grass/vegetation to grow near the seedlings? 3. Do you prune the chestnut trees?
Many thx,
Dave

They grow fast! And blight resistant! Thanks science!

You should do a test, leaving some in pots with no tubes but protected from wildlife, maybe add some fertiliser to those trees too.
