Sergei Polunin: Do You Feel Free? (Belgrade, Sept 17 2023)

Interview with ballet dancer, Sergei Polunin, on September 17, 2023 at the National Theater in Belgrade a few hours before the Sergei Polunin Foundation's humanitarian event - a gala fundraiser for this Foundation, which sponsors the education of young talented ballet artists in Serbia. Interviewed by Marija Mićanović with RT Balkan. (I made a few edits to the video, for aesthetic and other reasons, but the full content of the interview is included.)

Sergei Polunin won over fans of ballet with his performances with almost all the biggest ballet ensembles. The tattooed James Dean of the ballet scene, at only 19 years old, became the youngest premier of the London Royal Ballet in the history of this company. Born in Ukraine, he performs all over Russia and does not hide that he lost many engagements because of Vladimir Putin's tattoo. Specially for RT Balkan, he also reveals why freedom is inviolable, as well as why "the roads to China and India seem interesting to him".

Who is Sergei Polunin, the tattooed prince of dance?
As with any big star, you expect him to be a little late. But this was not the case with Sergei Polunin - he quietly entered greeted the audience and patiently answered questions. We did the interview a few hours before the humanitarian event of the "Sergei Polunin" Foundation, which collects funds for the education of talented ballet artists in Serbia.

Dressed head to toe in black, he seemed to "blend in" with the dark scenery, but his clear blue eyes and school attitude spoke for themselves. He was not bothered by the bells from the neighboring building, nor the constant ringing of the phone, he was concentrating on the answers, yet so calm and relaxed.

I respect Sergei Polunin and his family. I respect all people of Russia. I hold a great liking and respect for all Vaganova dancers and teachers, all Russian dancers from other ballet companies; and everyone else for that matter. I definitely wish everything goes well for all Russians. Including, Svetlana Zacharova, Nikolai Tsiskaridze, Nina Kaptsova, Maria Alexandrova, Evgenia Obraztsova, Valery Gergiev, Mikhail Lobukhin and my favourite 'Maria Khoreva'. And the list goes on. I'm so glad that I saw Romeo and Juliet at the Royal Albert Hall in December 2019. It may be that Sergei works far from 'the west' forever more. Very sad for us in the west. So many things are sad just now, but we must go on.
