Yacht rock is 70s soft rock. I grew up hearing as it came out and probably could sing every song word for word. Most people of are generation loved it

Gen Xer from the Midwest originally & I remember listening to Sailing when I packed up my Mazda & moved to San Diego in the 1980s
It's a great song that on a summer afternoon, I love a nice glass of wine & have Alexa play the yacht rock channel
Im totally with you Chris this music is similar to my memory of the first time I saw the pacific ocean it's sepia toned but golden in my mind for ever

I never heard the term 'yacht rock' before (and I don't know if anyone ever used this term b4. I'm skeptical. about its actual existence). From your description of soft, smooth music that you can cuddle to, that's called 'easy listening' or 'adult contemporary'.

My immediate though when you mentioned this category was Jimmy Buffet. Is he included? Because yachting communities actually did get really into him. That's all I ever heard about from yachting communities in the past. And most of his songs are about life near the beach.

This is why some unknown genius said "Writing about music is like dancing about architecture." Soft rock exists. And I love it. But there's no reason to redefine some sub-sub-sub-sub-sub-genre of music. Soft/yacht rock is great, but don't overcomplicate what art is.

Mock it all you want, I love yacht rock music! Sirius Xm radio has a yacht rock channel and it’s number one on my preset channels. I will be watching this.
