Just like any where else you might have some Japanese culture shock and learning a little about Japanese culture can go a long way. There are some social rules in Japanese that every tourist and expat in Japanese should be aware of so you know what not to do in Japan. Whether you are moving to Japan or just visiting Japan. These things you should never do in Japan will help!

Etiquette in Japan is similar to most parts of Asia but there are some differences. Heck there are differences within Japan so I tried to keep these 11 Things You Should Never Do In Japan and the Don'ts of Japan specific. What not to do in Tokyo would be a completely different video from what not to do in Osaka or what not to do in Kyoto. I couldn't cover everything in this Japan vlog, but the things in this Japanese vlog should apply and help you know how to be polite in Japan while visiting Japan.

This living in Japan vlog applies to and covers tourism Japan, life in Japan vs USA, life in Japan, living in Japan short term and long term, living in Japan vs USA, ,expat living in Japan, Japan revealed, Japan travel guide, Japan culture shocks, Things Not To Do In Japan, Japanese Culture Shock, Japan Travel Japan, living in Japan, Japan life, Japanese food, and Japan rules & Japanese Rules.

I lived in Tokyo for a year. Went to the market everyday and was ignored or treated rudely. For the first 30 days this went on and finally one day everyone was friendly and pleasant. My Japanese daughter in law said that they had to accept me into the neighborhood first by watching how I conducted myself in their market! I was treated like a local finally even though I am an old white woman from America. I really enjoyed my time there and would love to visit again.

I lived in Japan for 12 years. This list is very accurate except maybe 6. I have witnessed many people transiting while eating or drinking even doing it on the train. I do miss Japan and I really miss those hot coffee vending machines. Thanks, brother.

Malaysia announce that you can’t get back to your country if you come here in Malaysia.Universities, if you stay there, you can’t go out.And the students who got out to visit a place, can’t get back in.Its just getting worse this covid 19 .Here in Malaysia there’s 900 people who got it already, yikes :/

I also heard that in an Onsen you should not let your hair touch the water/ dunk your head. I love the last rule you mentioned. I hate people that are late as I am always on early haha

There are actually a lot of onsens that are open to westerners that have tattoos. I visited several when I was stationed there. I did have a problem at Disney, though.

I would add business cards to the list of items you always exchange with two hands and do NOT just take it and stuff it in your back pocket or wallet. If you are going to be in a situation where you might be exchanging business cards, get a holder that is reserved specifically for that purpose.

I would add on that that you SHOULD do is to learn a little bit of the language. Even if you only learn a few phrases, it goes a long way to making Japanese people comfortable in speaking English (which most of them know at least a little) if you make an effort to communicate in their language.

The rest of this list is on point, though. I miss Japan so much and my wife and I definitely have it on the list of places to get our kids to visit.

Thanks Luke and Yukako for helping out this list together.

These are right on the money! The hotels took me a bit to get used to, but on my last trip I learned some hotels offer “double rooms”, which is closer to what Americans are used to. The no tipping is the hardest for me to comply with!

Rule 1 is no joke. There is nothing worse than having the little old lady walking out into traffic because she thinks the light changed based on your actions.

The jaywalking ban must be a change. When I was first stationed in Japan in 1968, during base orientation, it was emphasized to watch for jaywalkers. If someone was on the side of the road, all they had to do was to raise their hand and this gave them the right of way over all vehicle traffic.

Never have loud conversation on trains. Japan has the quietest trains in the world!
