I’m an experienced ultra runner and came across this video and was curious so I watched it. I’m not typically a person who leaves comments but that was a excellent explanation about what we do, the effects, who can do it and what a great and welcoming community it is. Nice work and a great introduction to maybe some new folks joining in the fun.

Hi! this is the first time i saw your video and i a am so happy i found you. i ran my first half marathon 2 months ago in 2 hours exactly and it made me so happy, but it bored me a bit to run on a concrete in a city... that s when i started to think about trail running and i found out about ultra... i fell in love. i am still in the beginning but you are right - it changes you. i got to know myself so much better and left an ego everytime i got out there. greeting from Slovakia

The longest I ever ran was 4 miles and that was when I was 70lbs lighter but still very obese. I can only dream of running a marathon or even ultra marathon in my lifetime.

I am 21 and running my first 50k next Saturday. Longest I’ve ever run is 30k but I believe I can do it! :)

New sub! :) I have signed up for my first ultra next summer and I'm going to be 47. I have always loved multi-day hiking and have ran a few half marathons in the past few years. Once I found out about ultra running, it was a no brainer. My aim is simply to enjoy the day to its maximum. I win when i cross the start line, and not the finish line! I have no doubt in my mind that i will get there, but its not my focus. Good luck everyone. What ever your goals and aspirations are.

“Prepare yourself for one of the most beautiful, painful things you’ll ever go through in your life”

Isn’t that what they say about delivering a baby? 😄

I am at the start of a journey to get fit, have not run since high school & I am 46 now, nearly 47. Ultra marathons really appeal to me as I am competitive against myself, wanting to improve rather than to beat other people & trails appeal so much more than running on roads. I have set myself the goal to complete a 100 mile race before I am 50, which gives me 3 years 2 months to get from zero to goal. Videos like this are encouraging especially the stats on runners ages.

This is the best video I have found for beginners yet. Most of the other videos make it seem so scary and unattainable. Thanks for the great reassuring information

After taking 20yrs off from running, I finally started again at the end of September 2019. I'm training for the Vancouver marathon in may 2020. I have my first half marathon in 4 weeks. The furthest I've run so far is 14km or just over 8 miles. I already know that I could run a half, and could definitely finish a marathon. Keep up the good work and maybe someday I will see you on the trail.

Thank you for this! I listened to the audio version of "Born to Run" 5 or 6 years ago and decided to try running (at 47) because he made it sound so fun! It had always seemed like pounding drudgery. (Lack of proper running form...). So I got books on running and tried stuff, but nothing seemed to work, until I took off my shoes. Then things got really fun! Like being a kid again, only I didn't go barefoot much as a kid. I really wanted to do an ultra, but I kept overdoing it, mostly because, once I got out there, it was so fun I didn't want to stop. Now I just go running for fun and don't worry about ever training or doing anything serious with it. The commitment to training seems like it would take from, rather than add to the life I want to live, but it would also be great to join that community of other runners. Also I don't see myself doing that kind of distance barefoot yet and I really don't want to put on shoes and lose that intimacy with place that being barefoot provides. I still think some day maybe I'll try though... Thank you for the inspiration in that direction!

Great video, thanks for your inspiration. I recently signed up for my first 52k trail ultra though the Lüneburger Heide in Germany in June 2020.

I get it John.  I always get comments like "I can't believe you run that far." or "I could never run that far." but one of my favorites "Three miles is such a long way."  When I ran my first ultra, I didn't know the course but it was beautiful just as you said.  It was the Fire On The Mountain in the Maryland at the Green Ridge State Forest.  When I ran my own ultra around my hometown of Mannington, WV, I stated just what you said.  Marathons hurt.  Ultra marathons hurt.  But after you cross that finish line you get a new feeling about yourself.  The pain eventually goes away but the feeling of knowing that you did something only a small percentage of people have done is great.  I'm glad I did my race but I'm even more proud that I ran my own ultra marathon through my home town.  I couldn't believe that I was denied donating blood once because my heart rate was to low.  The nurse asked me if I feel good.  I told her sure.  I told her I was a runner but with a hear rate of 48, I could not donate blood.  I'd never heard of that before.

I've just started my road to an ultra next year, well three ultras lol. Have done a few marathons and been wanting to step up to the big leagues of ultra-marathons, this year was all about working on my mental strength and finding my 'why' for running/racing again ran my first trail race back in July 18km w/ 470m of vert gain and fell in love with the trails instantly. Working towards a 50k in mid July and using that as a taper/race simulation for a 100k three weeks after. Then will be completing my spartan trifecta with a Spartan ultra in mid September.

Thanks for the great video and definitely share the same 'why' of running ultras although I'm not the average ultra runner as I will be 24 at the time of my first of hopefully many
