I like that remote at number 2 and the security system. both appear to be truly useful devices and not just gimmick's that would never get used

I'm sceptical of the security system because I've never heard of anything like that, but it'll be awesome if it really works. I wonder if it can detect small animals like cats and dogs and ignore them. It would also be good if it can ignore consistent movements like a ceiling fan.

I know that you are into off-the-shelf as opposed to roll your own solutions but have you looked at Sonoff devices? These things are amazing - low cost, IOS/Android app and the sky is the limit as they are reflashable, They are based on the ESP8266 chip. You don't have reprogram them, they work great out of the box.
