I look at the decision between Math vs Physics major for your degree at university; it can be hard to choose between Math and Physics but I provide some guidance to you as you look at university choices.

I am still struggling to decide. Originally I was going to choose maths, but honestly love physics because of the application of the maths I learn in my math class. However I am worried at university you miss out on learning about real mathematics like impedance in a circuit using Euler's identity and simple harmonic motion for example, or how double slit uses small angle approximations. The moment they overlap makes me enjoy physics a lot more (not that I don't already like it). I don't want to miss out and am even considering a joint honours, or maths with applied maths (do you have any more information on these degrees). How abstract is math at university?, Can you not go into finance jobs with a Physics degree?. Do you get to do statistics in a physics degree? Do you learn about how maths is actually used in real life in a maths degree?

I appreciate you reading a slightly long-winded question and would love any help or advice you can give. Thank you😀

I think the cross-over between the two degrees, relating to content is huge. However the math content is not the science content, and vice versa. they are different degrees in their own right. For example Quantum physics and the electron configuration of a giant lattice are very different to an advanced matrix, these are considered fields apart regarding their content and application and could be regarded as completely different stems of a subject. (My opinion only!)

In high school I favoured mathematics over physics but at university I switched from mathematics to physics because I am a visual thinker. If you think geometrically, if you have good spatial visualisation, pursuing a physics education is much more suited to you. On the other hand if you are a sequential thinker, logic and proofs in a pure math degree are the better option.

I think one degree is as useful as the other. Employers should want people of these majors that are capable of thinking and problem solving. If you don’t secure an academic faculty position with tenure in either Pure math or Theoretical physics, you can be hired by Electrical Engineering or Computer Science in academia or more likely in commercial or aerospace and defense industries to work in these commercial more applied and product development areas. The key point is that you have to be willing to fill in the gaps where your Pure Maths and Theoretical Physics background may not cover in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science.

Hey, i did my last minute math revision with you for gcse. Now im going into alevel and im taking bio, chem and i want to do either math or physics as my third subject but i cannot decide at all, ive spent so much time thinking buti cant come to a conclusion. I have been quite stressed. I enjoyed both in gcse but gcse and alevels are so different so im stuck idk what ill find easier and enjoy, I want to choose one that might be just a bit more easy than the other 😢. I need your insight...

By choosing associate of maths can we study physics later in bachelor or masters degrees
