Tanzanian novelist Abdulrazak Gurnah wins Nobel Prize in Literature

Tanzanian novelist Abdulrazak Gurnah said Thursday he thought “this is somebody playing a joke” when the Swedish Academy told him he had won the Nobel Prize for Literature, for his book ‘Afterlives.’

“You know, these days you get a lot of these cold calls and you pick up the phone, you don’t know who is calling, and somebody says to you ‘You’ve won the Novel prize.’ And you think, “Oh yeah,” he said.

The Swedish Academy said Gurnah won the prize “for his uncompromising and compassionate penetration of the effects of colonialism and the fate of the refugee.”

Afterlives tells the story of two African boys who were made to fight for Germany’s colonial troops and after years of war, return to their childhood village to find their paths intertwined.

I don't know the guy, no idea if he's a good writer or not, but the way the prize was presented makes me think he only won because of his skin colour and because he wrote about refugees and colonialism. Stinks of PC...Anyone read anything written by the geezer?
