The Nobel prize for literature has been awarded to the Tanzanian-born novelist Abdulrazak Gurnah. His work focuses on colonialism and the fate of refugees.
It is the first time in 35 years that a Black African has won the prize, and comes as the Swedish Academy tries to avoid charges of Western bias.
Al Jazeera's Paul Rhys reports from Stockholm, Sweden.

He is not Tanzanian as Tanzania does not allow dual citizenship. He is a British citizen born in 1948 in what was the Sultanate of Zanzibar. He arrived in UK as a migrant teenager in 1968 to eventually become a British national.

I hope to win the Nobel Prize in literature one day. But not at 72. Because I may not live to that age with all the stress I am facing. I am 41 now. African living on the Motherland...

Had this civilization ever learned to respect the fullness of life, it would never have been as it is. As it stands, it will not continue to be. \o/ What a relief! Let's do better with the time we have left.

He is not Black African. He is Arab. His family live and identify as Arab in Zanzibar.

You are confused. How can he be the first "black African"... but then you talk about him leaving Africa because he was an arab facing persecution?! He is clearly not a black African, but a mixed breed arab. Also, African means you're black. You don't need to say black Africans, any more than you need to say a white European. Europeans are white, Africans are black. You should only bring race into African topics if the person is NOT black i.e African of arab or european heritage.
