Will your bank transactions remain safe, when Quantum computers are posing a threat to our finance network? Quantum communication may provide the solution to future proof safety and security.

This safety is priority in the SeQure project, funded by the TKI HTSM, and worked on by QuTech, TNO-Space and ABN AMRO. The project recently delivered on a major milestone towards a fully operational Quantum network: it successfully demonstrated an end-to-end secured financial transaction using a Quantum Key Distribution-generated encryption key.

Our QKD technology is based on a next-gen protocol known as “measurement device independent QKD” or MDI-QKD. With this protocol, many users can be connected in star type networks to a single Center Node where all the difficult, expensive hardware is kept. In this way, many users can, for example, share the free-space link to a satellite, which is made available from a telescope at the Center Node. The combination of free-space and fiber based optical links to transmit and deliver the MDI-QKD generated keys was successfully demonstrated by the partners in the SeQure project.

This project can be seen as a stepping stone towards future deployment of MDI-QKD technology in quantum networks across the Netherlands and Europe, which is part of the CAT-2 program of QDNL.
