Today I want to cover the top nutritional deficiencies in the elderly. This is actually a big problem.

There is even something called “tea and toast syndrome,” which develops over time as a person’s diet degenerates into things like bread, crackers, and even canned meats. A lot of deficiencies can be created from this type of diet. Typical foods served in nursing homes, such as many cooked foods, sugary foods, low-quality foods, and snacks, can also lead to deficiencies.

A lot of the elderly also take synthetic vitamins. The first ingredient in a lot of synthetic vitamins is calcium carbonate, which can be a problem. Medications are another thing that can also deplete vitamins.

The older you get, the less stomach acid you’re going to have. This means that you’re not going to be able to digest protein or pull in the amino acids, which are needed to help repair and heal the body. In this situation, it will also be harder to absorb vitamin B12, which can create a range of issues.

Top nutritional deficiencies in the elderly:
1. Vitamin D
2. Vitamin B1
3. Potassium
4. Magnesium
5. Sodium
6. Trace minerals (especially zinc)

The most common deficiency they have is the loneliness. There should be frequent fields trip from the middle/high school kids to these nursing homes. Schools should run these kinds of program. New generations needs to learn how to take care of the elderly.

As an octogenarian I was just given a really good bill of health from my doctor. Not all of us are complete idiots about what we need and many of us don't need our adult kids to
tell us what we need. What we really need is love, contact regularly with the family and our friends and geriatric specialists which are sorely lacking. I suppose this can be helpful and for sure the info is important. That's why I clicked on it.

Hi Dr. Berg, I wish you could consistently make "senior topics" a regular part of your outlay of vlogs. There's a lot of us out there, from our 50's 60s, to 80's and beyond. We need information that is easy to use. This was a good vlog, but I have a question. There's a lot of us with dental issues, and now, we have to watch the texture of food. Sure, we may have partials, false teeth etc. but we can't dig into a steak like we used to. Lots more hamburger if you know what I mean There are also issues with us being warned about sitting out in the sun due to the times we overdid it when we were sun-worshippers when we were younger. Many of us have pre cancerous skin tags and the like. So, we hear it from our doctors. "Don't go out in the Sun!"
And with nursing homes...most folks there are diabetic, WHY do they put out sugary snacks? (kill us off faster). We are a burden to most. That is a shame that we are viewed that way.
But please, make about 3 vlogs a month concerning health issues for the aging. We'd appreciate that!

When we are young (or young-ish / under 50) most of us take our health and longevity for granted. Most of us also lack empathy and understanding of what it's really like to be 65+ years old. We sit back and think how lucky retirees are to not have to work, etc. In reality, for many, it's an extremely lonely, depressing stage of life -- even if they've managed to keep relatively good health. The adult kids rarely come round, friends have moved/died, no work life interaction, maybe not feeling physically up to getting out much, so they become shut-ins in their own homes. Many start drinking/drugging to excess to combat the depression and boredom. Many more, as Dr. Berg said, let their nutrition go completely -- partly due to depression, but also loss of taste/smell the comes with age, tight budgets, and no one to cook for or eat with so what's the point? Even wealthy people can fall into this same stage, but it seems less apt to happen compared to those on tight budgets. So sad. Wake up people, and pay attention to your elderly family members because that's going to be us not to far down the road!

Thank you for this video. I thought I knew it all, but I wasn't aware of these details regarding the elderly, and I'm almost 70. Also, i've been taking multivitamins for years AND feeding them to my family. By watching this video of yours today, I've just now learned that Calcium Carbonate is LIMESTONE. I looked on my multivitamin bottles, and see that not only is it listed, but it's first on the list of ingredients. These were a name brand, but purchased at Walmart. So, I've thrown out those bottles, and will now go and watch some of your other videos about calcium. It could be that this video has saved me and my family from a lot of misery!!

I have been low carb for a year, and just had my calcium score done. Zero! I am 61 and the doc is happy even if my overall cholesterol is in the 200s, he has to take me seriously now.

I'm 44 and I'm going to base my diet and supplementation off of this information. It's never too late to start but it's always too late to wait.

My experience living with my mother in her 80's is that popping in a few vitamins or 2 will not accomplish much. I was also a nursing home administrator in the past (motivated me to live with mom) and forgive me if I sound defeatist but....most people there are in their final years and they have no motivation to rehabilitate themselves to a younger state. I'm 66 and started following Dr. Berg about 2 years ago. Even as dedicated as I've been, it's been a long slow road to feeling stronger, happier, motivated to live life fully. And I've learned, as Dr. Berg says, that the quality of supplements is critical. I finally found a brand of minerals that is improving a lot of things but I probably wasted thousands over the years trying different brands of individual vitamins and minerals. I'm still struggling to re-build muscle so - to all the young'uns out there, pay attention! Aging is a slow creep that you don't notice until suddenly you can hardly get out of bed in the morning.

My 97-year-old mom is in a nursing home and I can assure you, they get ZERO nutrition. When I visit I bring along several natural vitamins for her to take. I guess paying $12, 000 per/month doesn't equal good nutrition.
