How to wax and water-proof vegetable tanned leather.

In this video, I am sharing how I wax my leather projects to prolong their lifespan and waterproof them.

I have come to use a mixture of oils, fats, lanolin, beeswax, paraffin wax, and microcrystalline wax, all molten together and mixed. Once finished it can be applied to leather and molten in with a hair dryer or heat gun. It’ll feed and protect the leather, but I usually finish with a final coat of wax.

Thank you for the video, I get the same effect with "Brown Shoe Paste Polish!" No heat needed, Just apply a 1st coat, Them use the shoe brush's as you described, I usually apply 3-4 coats. With drying time in-between. It will darken the leather, Plus, Waterproof it at the same time. Works for me. I also do have Bee's wax. But, I prefer the Brown Paste Shoe polish, (Kiwi?) Or what ever brand you choose. And takes less time, Plus again, No heat needed!! again, just a thought!

I made a tool belt maybe 7-8 years ago using beeswax mixed with lanolin and it’s still going strong. The leather is permanently conditioned it seems.

I may be just boring but I really like that colour, I'm not an environmentalist in any shape or form but I feel veg-tanned leather with this finish is about as honest and chemical-free as you can get. It's simple and functional and I'm assuming it keeps the leather supple. I like to see how a product ages kind of like the patina trend we are seeing in cars at the moment. I want to see the blemishes, dents and dings a bag or wallet is likely to get over time. As I said it's an honest finish nothing is hidden I like this a lot, thank you buddy.

That's a good one.. liked your method.. However, do you have a workaround to reverse the darkening effect after waxing the leather or is it permanent? And does it lighten a little after completely drying?

I just painted a leather jacket with ink. Do you think the wax underneath could help seal it and prevent the jacket from fading or staining clothes?

Do you apply oil at any point? I am ramping up to make a messenger bag and was hoping to use this process but want to make sure the leather has some pliability by the end. Btw love your mail bag design from another video, gave me the confidence to try my hand at even bigger projects.

I have the beeswax so I’m still trying to find out on how to give this treatment to the leather in order to last.
As in permanent if possible.

What about melting a bowl of beeswax in microwave or something, then dipping the Leather in it? Would that work?

if it already has wax on it, do you remove it first, then re apply? For example the Birkenstock "oiled" upper straps, which are technically waxed to repel water

Seems kind of a difficult process. Wouldn't it just be a lot easier to apply a nice conditioner like Saphir to the leather.

I simply use "howard's feed-n-wax, wood polish & conditioner"… 😃
