It does work. Only yesterday, I did a 50/50 candle/Bees wax mix, for an old jacket I have.
I melted the two together, after chipping them both up with a cheese grater.
I then let the mixture sit until cooled overnight, and applied it to the coat like you did with the candle. After, I used a heat gun to melt it into the material.
All the best. 👍🏾🇬🇧

An easier way of applying the wax is to melt candle in a small pot till it's liquid and then brush it on with an old brush.

I just tried it, it works. In the past, I bought bee wax, turpentine and broil linseed oil to make the batch. But this is mush easier, faster and cheaper. Awesome!

Just rubbed a tea light over my canvas fishing hat and it is now completely waterproof! This works like a dream and saves heating in a pan. So easy quick and 100% effective! I’m going to do my old rain jacket that’s no longer waterproof next!

This is really nice! I'm a starbucks barista and often times get dish water all over my stomach when trying to quickly clean dishes, or when the new whipped cream canister gets temperamental and trys to give me a whipped cream bath, thanks much!

this is fantastic! was going to spend money on nikwax spray but just tried this with an old candle...amazing results. completely waterproof. thank you for this tip! also, in an emergency situation, you wouldnt even really need to melt the wax. it would work quite well with just the candle rubbing

This is basically the same idea as 'waxed cotton jackets' which have been sold in the UK for a long time.
These are very popular with farmers and outdoor sportsmen (and very expensive!)

I use beeswax because I like the smell. Also, washing is not a big issue unless you really overwax. I just put mine in double pillowcases and run them in a dryer at the laundrymat. The hour or so on high heat not only soaks it deep into the fibers, but the inner pillowcase absorbs any extra and protects the dryer. if it soaks in well, the weave will be open enough to breathe a bit, but is still waterproof. Lanolin works very well on tight knit wools too, but it will increase the wool odor when wet (but I dont care). Just be aware that beeswax and lanolin (like many odors) seem to interest the bears and they may get into an unattended pack. on that note, everything that Ive ever treated with things containing mink oil (like sno seal) has been eatten by mice.

It's rain season here in the Philippines and tried researching waterproofing ways(Gore-tex products are not cheap in this country - everything imported comes with a 200% tax with it) and found this video. I ride a motorcycle to work 5 days a week. It'll be a good test scenario to see how long it lasts. Looks very promising. I'll update this comment once I have results. Cheers!

What a great idea! Normal "ingrediants" and easy for everyone to do. Thank you for sharing!

You forgot the other down side, your clothes won't breathe. If you get hot you will be wet from the index from your own sweat. Sweat enough when working in cold weather you can get hypothermia when you stop moving and that sweat starts to rob your body of needed heat. So make sure you are careful not to get over heated or treat only your pant legs so any moisture can breathe out through the rest of your pants.

I did that to my old boots, I got left with after the army service. This method works. Period.

I was totally thinking of doing this. Thanks for showing how well it works. Now just take a lighter to it and see how flammable it really is.
