How are we supposed to work out really long calculations if we are prohibited to use a calculator?

Adham - I doubt you will have to do anything that difficult. The questions I've seen ask for the method, rather than the actual answer

How are you meant to deal with such big numbers like 2 to the power of 20 on a paper that is non-calculator?
