Dry Eyes, Dry Mouth (Sicca Syndrome versus Sjogren’s Syndrome) Philip Clements, MD, MPH- 2017

Dry eyes and dry mouth are frequently reported by patients with systemic sclerosis. There are many medications and a number of other disease entities that can occur in life that can account for some of the dryness. Less than one-quarter of the SSc patients with dryness of the eyes and/or mouth will be found to have Sjogren’s Syndrome. Evaluation and treatments for dryness will be discussed.

Does anyone have PBC as well as Sjogrens? I am in the UK and finding getting diagnosed very difficult. I have sicca symptoms, dry nose actually is worse than mouth, eyes and throat. My liver enzymes abnormal so they are querying PBC and because my autoimmune screen was negative they are reluctant to refer to Rheumatology until I get my PBC sorted out. I know you have both but it is very important to know because the treatment for one can clash with the other. I don't know how people cope with both, honestly, it is just hopeless. I don;t apologise for being negative, I see a lot of comments saying you should be postive and all this pushing people to be active, but I don't know how you can be. So I am a negative thinker and I don't criticise anyone for being the same.

If it was just dry eyes and mouth this disease would be heaven. Let's talk about the stroke like neuropathy, the liver swelling, constant bronchitis like you smoke 5 packs a day, swelling on the spine and it only gets worse as you get older.

Johnson's baby soap for blepharitis very outdated and disrupts the tear film if you have dryness. Use blephasol or something specifically designed for it.

What about if the submandibular gland is swollen and hard? Does it need to be biopsied, too? I've been wanting it biopsied. I just got the SS diagnosis, but have been concerned about lymphoma for a while.
