In this short video, I briefly describe what a tongue tie is, and when we should consider treating it.
This is a common concern, and is often over diagnosed and over treated due to the parental concerns. It is important to recognize early and assess with lactation support. Treatment is only needed where it clearly interferes with a good latch, and is causing more pain than normal during breastfeeding and baby is showing signs of inadequate milk intake. Once we diagnose the problem, it is better to treat early to avoid the huge difficulty in establishing lactation, and the stress caused to the mom and baby. Waiting is an option in the mild cases where the mother infant dyad might adapt to the tongue tie. Posterior tongue tie with a small tongue is more difficult to diagnose and needs expert treatment, but we should be careful not to attribute any baby with difficulty establishing lactation to this possible concern. Typical tongue ties can be treated by pediatric surgeons and some Neonatologists with privileges for the procedure. Posterior tongue tie should be repaired only by surgeons with experience in this procedure.
