Coming Out to My Dad - LIVE REACTION

I came out to my dad as gay. His reaction to my coming out was hard to take. My dad's reaction to me coming out as gay is difficult for me to watch even though it has been more than a year since. To say that his reaction was what I wanted would be inaccurate. He has gotten better about me being gay and about my boyfriend but his reaction is very much representative of how he feels about it. Please let this video be a warning that coming out is not always a pleasant experience.

Sister: Me too..

Dad: Wow is there anyone in this house that likes boys?!?

Brother: I do!

i think older people are blind when it comes to noticing the lgbt cuz i took one look at this boy and i done knew he is gay! lol

My heart broke for this boy. I'm not a mother yet but if ever any of my future kids were to tell me they were gay, my first instinct would be to take them in my arms and remind them that I love them to the ends of the earth no matter what

this kid is scared and nervous, but he's a soldier. he handles it very well, from the moment he hears his dad's steps coming to the room to when the silence hits.

Well his reaction wasn't bad, he was just a little shocked. He looked like he would get used to it. I guess that he didn't say much because of the camera.

My parents were ordering pizza when I came out. I was like "Mum, dad I'm gay!"
They were like "Yeah we know, do you want deep pan or thin crust?"
I think I had it easy

How could his parents have not known he was gay? His mannerisms etc... I think they both knew but were in denial.

Honestly, I didn't see anything to complain about in your dad. He is clearly shocked and taken aback. He seems unprepared for the gravity of your revelation and probably also uncomfortable that he is on camera to be seen by thousands of strangers in a private, intimate, family moment. I don't blame him. You kept smiling at him nervously trying to get him to react more, but he gave you the best he could in the moment. He looked a lot more uncomfortable than you tbh.

That wasn't really a bad reaction. More of a neutral one. You could see he was processing and digesting. To put it in perspective, most fathers craft a future in their minds of who/what they want their sons to be. Slightly older generations never really even consider the possibilities of sexuality. That was definitely a reaction that leaves room for discourse and understanding.

He just needs a minute. He seems to be far more shocked than anything. I'm sure after a few days and some heavy thinking he'll come around. I bet he just finds it awkward to talk about because he never expected it was an issue he'd need to think about, especially about someone so close to him (like a son).

It's gotta be tough to have you Dad react like that but don't count him out yet.

He might just never mention it again, so just bring it up sometime after the awkwardness goes away if you want to talk about it. (If he doesn't mention it again, that is)

That moment at 2:12 when he said "I don't prefer it" and they both laugh breaks my heart so much. He was so brave to tell his father, and all he wanted was to be accepted and his father just joked about it. How disheartening, and cold. I hope his father can open his eyes, and see what a great young man he has. Love and light.

Give your dad some time, i'm sure he has A LOT of questions and in some way may blame himself. It took you a long time to admit it to yourself and it will take him time.

He handled this so gracefully. The son, that is. The father just looked like he didn't know how to handle it because he's never dealt with such a thing. But omg his son so eloquentally handled it, and I hope that there only lead to more understanding!
