My personal take is that when an Artist is done with a work and makes it to the public, it's no longer his work, its ours. So, his relationship with the work is different from what you would normally expect. It is "his" work, but at the same time, not anymore. Its done and gone, even if tries to "go back and remake". This gives him the opportunity to reflect on past decisions and inspirations. It is a painful but enlighting process.
