the advantage of the echo auto is, that it does not need a hot spot but draws the online connection over bluetooth. Therefore you do not have to always activate your hotspot whe entering the car.

Interesting, I have seen other people doing similar things with either google or alexa. I would hope that somewhere soon that both of these platforms would be built in to the communication system of the car, with voice recognition so not everyone could be shouting out things at the same time. And a person would have their choice of what they would use. That guy did a lot of extra work to make his choice work in his car. Don't think i would have done all that. Great video Brian. always look forward to your videos that spark an interest in something i am interested in.

As he noted he spoke to his dealer about his installation. This is very important as some airbag sensors use RF signal to send to their main controller and some controllers set in the middle console. Placing a hotspot on top of these main controllers could disrupt the operation of your airbags! It is important to look at your car safety features. As I know it's been a while since I have done anything with these things it may have changed but please always be on the safe side. And as Brian always says don't hate automate! Thank you very much for the great information and the great interview it was really good.

Inspired by this video, I bought a Kiwi battery base for the Google Mini and linked the mini to my phone hotspot. Very cool!

How much data does this use on the hotspot say per month

I'm going to try this with several modifications.

Setup with be an Echo Input output to aux, hooked to switched power and relying on the phone I carry for the network tether.

I realize this breaks the criteria for the original install but it will...
1. Ensure no battery drain problem.
2. Give me easy control of data usage as I'm on a plan with a cap.
3. Allow continued use of Bluetooth between my phone and car.
4. Lower profile.

Downsides
1. Boot time.
2. Having to switch audio source to hear the Echo Input. This, to me, is the biggest problem and I may switch to an Echo Dot because of it.

why run direct from the battery though? i have an echo dot (gen2) that starts up with my computer and it honestly doesn't take that long

I’m not clear on why simply plugging in an Echo Dot into my existing 5V USB Charging port isn’t a better idea. No modifications required, no running a cable in the engine compartment, no fuse, etc.

I can connect the Echo Dot to Wifi using a Hotspot in my phone, no need to buy a physical device or pay $10 a month.

What am I missing? The Dot will never discharge my car battery, My phone’s hotspot turns on automatically when I’m in the car. Is it the 40 seconds it takes to be ready to take voice commands?
