Funny story: I took an class on ancient warfare in college. Professor demonstrated many weapons including the sling. He accidentally broke a light on a building about 50 yards away. It went further than he thoight. He was about 60 years old.
He just said "s#!+, time to go" and led the class back inside.

The balaric slingers were some of the most feared mercenaries in all of Europe at their time. They would use slings from children to adulthood, often having to hit down their food with a sling before being allowed to eat it as a way of practice. They were extremely effective, and extremely feared. Because, what do you even do against it? Not a whole lot.

The Romans would drill holes in the rocks so they would make unsettling whistle sounds. The Romans would also write dirty messages on the rocks. 😅

One of the coolest thing i learned about slings was how sometimes you had them attached to the end of a staff. In essence a walking stick and a sling, (two very common items across all of history), would turn you into a one man Trebuchet

Shepherd Sling can be used with a staff. With a sling on the end of a staff, you can explode skulls apart with that extra length/leverage

I've had a thought experiment for a while now asking "if I had to raise a medieval/ancient army, what would I equip them with"

No matter what I would always be able to give my soldiers pikes and slings. While a big part of me looks to the Genoese style of "powerful crossbow and big shield, " a sling would never encumber my soldiers yet allow me to focus on pike drills.

At close range people can be accurate with those things, and those projectiles go much faster than you'd think so those things were very deadly.

It truly was the great equalizer of the ancient world as is demonstrated by the most famous underdog story of all time where David defeats Goliath with his sling.
