Tablo Dual HDMI Over the Air DVR for Antennas Review

This is my review of the Tablo Dual HDMI OTA DVR. It's one of the few DVRs for antennas you can connect directly to your TV set. It features two built in tuners, virtually unlimited storage, and direct HDMI output for a TV set. You can also access your local channels wirelessly on other devices or automatically skip commercials with a premium subscription.

I took your advice and bought the dual hdmi Tablo & Seagate 2-TB hard drive.Everthing went ok for about 2-days and then troubles arose? The unit went into a constant buffering mod and would not release.Called tablo support and they are heplful. They told me to go to either the Apple App store or Google play store and down load an app. This app is only available on Android and IOS smartphones and tablets. This is a diagnostic tool.Once you have followed the tech instructions, you place your phone next to the Tablo unit, this runs a diagnostic on the Tablo, once you get a code
on your phone, after the diagnostic run, you give this code to Tablo tech, support for analization. After doing this I still had trouble, but powered down the unit and unplgged the hard drive, for a bit
and everthing came back on the right way! At this point every thing looks good and I am set to subscribe to the yearly, subscription.Thanx for the info, video, John W.

I bought one of these about a week ago and am very happy with it so far. I was a Dish customer for 12 years, and cable for many years before that. Our main TV is a fairly new 65" Sony 4K. One unexpected benefit of cord cutting for me was the improvement in picture quality with the over-the-air (OTA) signal. Our picture was always good, but now it's really good, approaching the quality in the TV showroom at Best Buy. I did not realize how much satellite/cable systems process the signal before it reaches you. I like that this Tablo unit does not process the OTA signal at all, rather it passes directly to the TV via HDMI unaltered. Other DVR models process the signal and transmit it in a different format to the TVs via wifi, which I suspect degrades the picture to some extent. I have limited wifi bandwidth available to me, so that was another advantage of the HDMI connected design in my case.
The channel guide and DVR functions with this unit are as good as, or better than, those with the Dish system. I do not like the idea of DVR storage on the "cloud" as with many other OTA DVRs. I have not connected a second TV via wifi yet, but am not really concerned about picture quality on the second TV as it is only a small bedroom/kitchen size. I went ahead and subscribed to the premium service, I think the benefits are well worth the price. Keep up the good work Tyler!

When we cut the cord several years ago, I purchased a Tablo and it works great. We have the full subscription for one price for the guide and never looked back. We don't use their auto skip feature since it tended to cut off the end and beginning of a show a lot of the time. We find it no problem to use the remote to move through commercials and not miss any of the show.

I know back in early December I bought the Tablo dual. It's not the one with the HDMI but I did see it. I love this thing. This thing is so amazing. I just record like a crazy person.

Great overview. I have the same Tablo. I found having a powerful antenna is best. my Tablo took forever to download my channels but when I unselected some channels it loaded the guide faster. Lastly, I'm not thrilled about paying extra for the channel guide subscription. $50 per year doesn't seem so bad but for a photos cord cutter, it's not really cord cutting.

Fantastic Review. This is one of the best reviews of a Tablo I've seen.

Love my Tablo. Especially being able to rip the recordings to my PC and then wipe out the commercials and then use it to help fill my Plex library

I love my tablo quad. I'll be upgrading once they come out with a quad with the new 3.0 standard.

This was very informative and I'm glad it's not about being 1st but the message on how and why! Thank you for sharing!

I ordered a two channel tablo light yesterday based on your earlier video. It's going to allow me to get rid of the antenna wire to my main tv and allow me to add a tv in the bedroom.

I have had the original Tablo, 2 tuner unit. I have been using it for a few years. The tablo connects to our in home LAN so we can drive any signal anywhere in the house. We connect to the tablo through a Roku. That was how the older units transferred the signal to the tv. We have added roku sticks to the other TVs in the house and can broadcast the TV tuner signal to any of the TVs with the roku attached. Also the phone or tablet can have the tablo app and you can watch on your device too. this is a great unit but I probably should have got the quad tuner unit. So you can record or display more than 2 tv signals from our antenna.

You really need the $5 subscription for the best features, like you mention the "nice looking thumbnails." Stuff like that goes away with the base 24hr guide. I love my Tablo and decided it was worth it. It makes recording much easier and reliable. Although recording works without the guide, it becomes a lot of work to get right.

Hello antenna man, on tablo do i need to add external hard drive or just use the built in drive. Do you know how many shows can be recorded on internal. Keep up the good work. 😊

Love your YouTube videos I got a question for you is there a such thing of having your outside antenna too high in the air

Ironically, YouTube inserted an ad right as you were demonstrating the automatic commercial skip feature.

It's not your wi-fi connection that makes it slow. It is the Tablo that is
