Are FWD Cars Actually Boring?

Most people say front wheel drive cars are lame and boring to drive, but is that really true? In this video I'll explain why front wheel drive cars aren't necessarily boring, and actually quite fun to drive!

Many excellent points. I also noticed that the pacing of the video with the editing was done very well! Having recently had my RWD awakening, I do get what people are talking about, but I still really enjoy driving my FWD C30, and the C30 with the mods I have done is definitely the quicker car through the corners. The same speed that I would have to fight with the RX-8 I can almost cruise with the C30, but that's probably mostly down to my coilovers and great tires on the C30 vs stock suspension and bad tires on the Mazda. But the Mazda is more fun, and more of an experience with the 9500RPM Doritos. But I also think it's an unfair comparison, since the rx-8 is literally a sports car with double wishbone front, multi link rear, and a slight rear weight bias. And with a majority of that weight being close to the centre of the car. The ends of the car just feel weightless, and when you corner hard, it just feels like it's rotating around the centre point of the car, I've never, ever experienced anything like it elsewhere, it literally feels bizarre, but sooo good. Not to mention the Limited slip rear diff, making all intersections and roundabouts into drifting games. It's absolutely ridiculous how easy the RX-8 is to control when sliding. My first time ever going sideways in it I literally just did it, and it was just like "wow, that was way to easy!" I think my 4th time ever going sideways I connected two low speed corners without a problem. Absolutely crazy! Basically if you ever get a chance to drive a RX-8 on some twisty roads, DO IT! 😃

My RWD Lincoln Town Car has traction control so I don't spin out if I give it too much gas, even in rain and snow. My previous car was a older RWD car that didn't have traction control and sure enough, I lost control on a wet road then crashed into a tree and died.

Torque steer is really a balancing issue, it doesn't really have much to do with drivetrain. The reason why it is particularly prominent in fwds is because they are pretty horribly balanced from the factory. Most fwd engines are mounted off centre for packaging reasons and there can be physical differences in length of actual driving and steering components which cause left or right pull on high throttle input.

If you got a Subaru and took out the rear driving axle to make it a fwd and it was a WRX(high powered) it likely wouldn't pull that much to either side given how well balanced the boxer engine and other engine bay components are from factory.

The Civic in this video has McPherson strut suspension in front and I heard the Si version handles well but you still need to experience a double wishbone suspension Civic, double wishbone suspension is far superior to McPherson. Basically 4 gen to 6 gen Civics and 2nd and 3rd gen integras ( same suspension basically) and most important a DC2 Interga Type R with parts of its chassis stitch welded from factory for more rigidity. Then you can have a better opinion of FWD cars when you try the best the outperform RWD cars in Auto X. Jubal has a video on the DC2 R on YT check it out and most of all teat drive the cars I mentioned before.

My first car nearly 20 years ago was a FWD Mazda Protege. Then I upgraded a few years later to a 2004 Honda Civic Coupe. I later sold the Civic and got a Acura TSX, all of which were FWD cars. Then I got an AWD 2019 Mazda Mazda3 Premium and realized that FWD cars are severely handicapped. The Mazda felt way more surefooted in the rain and snow when accelerating and even in the dry it felt better. But the car was still FWD based so the engine was still hanging way over the front axle which made it feel unbalanced. If I wasn’t giving the car throttle in the corners to engage the rear differential, it would just switch to FWD mode and understeer…… Then I got a 2001 BMW Z3 3.0i roadster as a summer car…. Smooth inline 6, RWD, perfect weight distribution, and most of the engine behind the front axle. Having never owned a RWD car before I instantly knew why people love them so much. The Z3 was on absolute RAILS. Nothing could upset the car, and when it did break traction, it did so predictably. I was drifting the car after only owning it for 24 hours as if I had been driving RWD cars all my life. It was that good. Almost instantly I sold my Mazda3 and went out a bought a BMW 3 Series. The car has xDrive, but it’s RWD based so it’s balanced. In my experience, FWD cars serve a purpose of affordability, safety, and they are much more accessible to a variety of buyers. But if you truly enjoy driving and want a car that’s ready and willing to play, get something RWD. Mazda MX-5, Toyota GR86, BMW 128 Coupe are all great reliable RWD cars. And if you need 4 doors a W203 Mercedes Benz C230 Sport (1.8 Kompressor or 2.5L V6) is a great affordable and extremely reliable RWD sedan.

Contrary to popular belief you can drift fwd, and these cars absolutely destroy rwds on dirt. Some of the biggest drifts on gravel I've seen done by fwds. With the correct tires and sway bar set up, they can hang the back out on tarmac as well, or just by simply ripping the handbrake.

The driver's "driving style" is another factor in the equation of a fun vehicle. I've ridden with other folks and drove their vehicles later on. Let's just say majority of the drivers only know how to go "fast" on the straight aways and they don't know how to take a corner FAST. Another variable is the driver's regular attitude when they drive. Many of the drivers I rode with are NPCs. "20 years" of just NPC driving is not an experience to be proud of.

Depends on the type of car, I've been dailying a FoST for 6 years and it's a riot even though it's "wrong wheel drive." Crown Vics are RWD but I don't think anyone is saying that it'll be more fun to drive than my FoST lol.
