Couple of quick sidenotes: 1) Sometimes regedit will not allow you to have 2 keys with same name. You will get the dreaded "The registry editor cannot rename "Key Name". Error while ranaming key" message (no, changing permissions will not help). Use 3rd party regedit like reg finder or reg kool. 2) MIcrosoft widgets (like news feeds, for example) are "hardcoded" to open links in MS Edge. If you disable it, you will not be able to open those links. There are 3rd party "solutions" to this like MSEdgeRedirect. But install those at your own risk. It can get messy.

11:02 or use a 3rd party regedit or use a powershell script that deletes the specific key

Interestingly the checkout systems at my work actually have something like this in place to block the start menu from opening, so if you attempt to click the start button, nothing happens. Not quite sure how they did that but I'm guessing it's through a similar method as is shown in this video haha.

Great video, Rich! This is actually ironic because it was only two days ago I was wondering how blocking programs from running could be accomplished within Windows and sure enough here you are with a video for it 😄

Thank you for the videos.

Anyway to stop copilot and MS Recall being installed? I am on Windows 10 and will have to move to 11 but don't want the MS tracking or AI crap installed.

Thank you @CyberCPU for another great vid. I know this is slightly off-topic, but wasn't there a big stink years ago when Microsoft started including IE as the Windows default browser? I'm sure there were lawsuits involved! Sounds like they're up to their old tricks again with Edge. Anyway, I'm off to watch your pranks video now =)

When I had corporate Windows I just used Portable version of apps I needed. 1. No need to install. 2. Portables usually are not restricted. :)

That's why I use UVK ("Ultra-Virus-Killer") from carifred (free edition). No it's not malware, and I used it to disable the clipboard Win+V clipboard menu from showing up in turn for CopyQ, a program replacement that uses 5% of the ram of the windows clipboard menu in Windows 11. UVK is GUI so no registry editing required.

It can block any program from running by permissions, but you should keep a list of those you disable, because not even you can edit/execute them without unblocking them. It can also block entire folders too.

Simplest - I've done it for years.
Just rename whatever the program/app is, change (Rename) the EXE file extension to something else (any extension that isn't 'runnable')
For example, to "kill" Notepad, find Notepad.exe and rename it, to be, say, "Notepad.exe.BLOCKED". Notepad will no longer run.
This is better than just Deleting the file completely, as you can easily re-instate the program by renaming it again and knocking off the ".BLOCKED" bit of the extension.

Hi - I love your podcast, it has been very useful. Question - How can I disable the Windows Store services AppXSvc and ClipSVC? I don't have or want a MS account and never go to MS Store. Thanx a bunch.

10:59 or use system restore as it restores the registry. So be sure to create a restore point before blocking regedit.exe!

Blocking Edge for me is simple, I uninstall it, I'm in the EU, what I want is how to stop WebView2 being stealth installed when removed. No, it's not needed no matter what anyone says, if that was the case then Windows Server 2022/2025 would not allow us to also remove it but the normal way - 2025 also proves that TPM is really optional for Windows 11. BTW, why not use the commmand-line or powershell to fix registry when regedit is blocked? No need for recovery mode.

That's an "explorer" key. So run it from another program, like a CMD box or powershell, and it should still open.

There is an option to modify registries using power shell. With the help of a few commands you can delete the registry that blocks regedit and start it again. Or if you are a little more familiar with scripts you can create two files enable and disable regedit and put them on a flash drive with which only you will be able to activate and modify the registries. I think that also through CMD or a bat file using " reg delete "HKLM\Some\Registry\Path" /f " by describing the path to the specific registry. But accordingly, you need to know the exact path. It is good to create this .bat file and save it before closing regedit. The command should be something like this but I haven't tested it.
