By default, "Delete Cropped Pixels" is enabled, which will permanently delete your cropped off area. By turning this option off, you preserve the original pixels of your image, just in case you need to retrieve them later.

OMG - thank you so much! This has always frustrated me and look, it only took me 8 years to find your video and learn about the check box!!!!

Over the long term it will be inevitable to underscore whether a feature in CC is available in CS6 as well or not. I guess for many CS6 will stay the reference for a very long time.

Your Thursday ‪#‎Photoshop‬ Tip! Nothing is more frustrating than destructive cropping! Make sure you turn off "Delete Cropped Pixels" to avoid losing your original image!

Yup! The option is in there for CS5 and CS6! Always remember to keep this unticked. Cheers Howard! :)

Usually that's not possible. Enlarging low resolution images will typically make them worse.

Howard, if you cropped an image without deleting pixels, and saved it as a .psd, if you opened that .psd, would you be able to see the area you cropped?

I remember learning this one the hard way back in school. I was doing a flyer for a literary event that the English department was putting on, cropped an image of the outside of the school, didn't realize until about three or four edits later (Text layers, layer mask, gaussian blur and a high pass) that I cropped a letter off of the schools name. That was not a fun time.
