Btw if you convert something to smart objects, do it by selecting and converting layers one by one ...if you multi select and convert, it will turn all those images into a one smart object i think
And also make sure the layer visibility is turned on when converting or the converted layer will be an empty one.
And also to access the smart objects "container" double click on the layer thumbnail...
