How To Crop Layers In Photoshop

If you've ever tried using the Crop Tool in Photoshop then you've probably noticed that it works by applying the changes to the entire document, which includes all of its layers. This means that the Crop Tool cannot be used to crop layers. That's okay though because there's various workarounds, and in this tutorial we'll be going over the way to crop a layer in Photoshop. The method we'll be employing in this lesson will allow you to crop manually or by inputting numerical values. Furthermore, it is non-destructive, meaning you can go back and edit the changes later on if need be.

It's crazy how complicated this is in photoshop, whereas in canva it's so easy. HOWEVER, this video actually made sense and helped me through it. Thank you!!

A way I use for most of my work is to convert my pictures to smart object and then double click on the layer and crop the image there so it will automatically crop the layer that I want (it may not be useful for some situations but personally it has saved me so much time )

How about cropping a transparent (PNG) image? How can I do it through clipping mask without Fill on the shape in the first place?

First, thank you for taking the time to make this tutorial.

That said, is this the easiest or quickest way to do this?
I truly don't mean any disrespect but that was an absurd amount of steps to simply crop a simple rectangular portion of a layer.
All these years and this is the best Adobe has come up with?

But in the case of cropping a transparent object, you will end up filling it with black background though

Wow - I read and watched about 10 different videos before this - so convoluted compared to this solution. Very cool.

Another trick is using rectangle tool to draw black rectangles and then masking.

I may be doing something wrong, when I do Cmd T it takes me to resize the image rather than crop it. I'm losing my mind over something that's probably so simple!
