Take Advantage Of Counter Damage | A Tip For Your Build | Elden Ring

Elden Ring was multiple hidden mechanics that it does not teach the player. One of these is the existence of Counter Hits that lead to Counter Damage. If you hit an enemy at the precise moment, we will get a big boost to the damage that we deal. If we are able to chain these Counter Hits together, our DPS will sky rocket. A perfect mechanic for your those players that go the extra mile. If you master it, your attacks will simply annihilate all enemies.

ADDENDUM
In the "Counter Damage on Players" Chapter of the video, I establish that Counter Damage in these cases is represented by a 15% drop of Pierce-Type Negation. In the same way, I show examples of how this Negation drop is lesser on the Player as they wear more protective armor. I draw the conclusion that, with more Negation, there will be less Counter Damage taken. All of this information is correct.

That being said, I should have been more clear in establishing that, regardless of how much armor the Player wears, or how much damage they actually take from the attack, whether it's a lot or a little, it will always be 15% more than what they would have taken from a normal hit.

The General Rule is then established as +30% damage VS PvE Enemies and +15% damage VS Players.

Thank you for your understanding and I apologize for the inconvenience.

For anyone thinking about the math behind the scaling counter damage based on armor, the thing to remember is that regardless of armor the player takes 15% more damage. With heavy armor the amount of damage is less, but it is still 15% more. The formula is (100 - protection)*15%. So if you have 40% armor, you take (100-40)*15/100 or 9% damage. If you have 20% armor you take (100-20)*15/100 or 12% damage. Although it sounds like the player is taking less damage with more armor, because they are, the point is that it is always 15% more than what they would have received without the counter.

Well done, as always. The more videos I watch, the closer I get to figuring out the "Perfect Build" for myself lol Thank you Frowny, I appreciate your work.

Thanks again for the deep dive into the game's mechanics once again. This is clearly another aspect of the game I don't engage enough with and worth practicing for. ER practically spoiled me with too many weapons to play with.

Hope your job doesn't kick your butt too much, btw.

Hi i wanted to know if i would get the full dmg value of counter dmg if i use a multi-hit ash of war like blood tax or Eochaid's Dancing Blade. More precisely, would the game apply counter dmg to the full Ash of War of the Marais Executioner's Sword or only the first enstance of dmg (if i end up stunlock/stagering/poise breaking other player)

I understand the principle and i know it is unlikely, but i still hope it does.
I just wanted a clear and definitive answer.

If I use spear with great shield and keep spaming r1 while blocking will it be counter attack?

good info and well made video.
however how does one take advantage of this in PVE? blocking and rocking a spear or thrusting weapon to trade is a safe way but you don't get a lot out of it because blocking while attacking lowers your damage output making it just be about as much you would have done if you were just trying to hit the enemy normally, ofcourse there is the out spacing the enemy so their attack misses but yours land, however the enemy usually don't get staggered by a normal attack unless they are really weak so they will most likely just poise through it and continue their combo that will hit you, and really most enemies that are scary that you want to use counter attacks on they will most likely have a longer reach than you making this point mute.
so that leaves only 3 things you can do to actually get any worth out of it and that is if you jump over the enemys attack and do your own or space the enemy out and keep distance until the last hit of the enemys combo to where you can time it safely and lastly just moving out of the way of the enemys attack in a sideways fashion so the enemy will just miss and keep missing if they continue their combo, so basically abusing the enemys lack of sideways attacking or lack of tracking.

i've tried but i find it really difficult unless it's a slow boss or i know the attacks so well i know where i can stand without getting hit, and that really does take experimenting and practice and experience, so there's really no easy way of using counter attacks unless you trade blows with the enemy and trading blows isn't that useful in pve.

what would be the best build then for pve with counter only. Maybe a two handed colossal? or shirld and great hammer?

Thank you!! I am figuring this out after 300 hours in the game. I have a doubt: Will the counter attack always cancel the enemy atack?

Is this a rework/departure of counter damage from previous Souls games? From memory, every weapon had the potential to deal Counter Damage, but it was only Pierce damage from Thrust attacks were boosted from the Leo Ring effect.

I could swear to god DS3 sacred flame got counter damage, especially if the caster took damage, I would see it tick damage numbers over 3000+ and max out someone's hp before the big explosion even went off, and with a regular pyro flame too!
