2023 Acura TLX Type S Review - Deserving of its Type S Badge?

I had so many questions about the TLX Type S going into this review. Is it worth $5-7K more than the Integra Type S as a multi-purpose performance car? Is SH-AWD any good? Is 4200 lbs way too heavy for a sports sedan?

I own a 21 TLX TypeS (first year of production 1878/2000). Daily driver and love it! Back seat leg room is ridiculously small and I have gotten used to the infotainment system. A lot of car for the money. White to match my NSX.

I absolutely love the upshift sounds. Sounds so sudden, Way better than a zf8 fart

If nothing else this car is looker. I think it might be the best looking sedan on the market. I’m torn on whether it is worthy of a Type S badge, but as stated I think it is a desirable daily driver.

lol at your v8 suggestion of this engine at 8:40. It just isn’t tuned to have the low end torque kick that other turbos have but has the usual power drop off after 5k rpm. Compared to the integra type s, this reaffirms this should’ve been an A spec trim.

I’ve owned my TLX-S since Launch day August 2021, the car has been great. I echo your sentiment on everything except the touchpad, honestly you get used to it and it’s a non issue. I do wish it wouldn’t auto upshift though!

My car is K-tuned and full bolt on btw, and the smiles per gallon improve quite a bit! 😅

Great review, spot on in many points. I have this exact vehicle (just with the Black interior). It's as stated in the review and in the comments a LOT for your money. Personally I rarely touch the trackpad, added a wireless carplay adapter and talk to Siri to get whatever app I want on the screen. Not a fan of the braking, I'm coming from a Subaru Sti, the brembos on that were bliss, brake by wire just doesn't feel right to me after that for 6 years. Really impressed by the gas mileage.

This engine really should make another 60-80 hp in this day and age where we have 2.9L and 3.0L v6 turbos making 600+ hp. It barely makes more than the CTR despite much more displacement. This car feels like Honda trying to do the bare minimum to get the car out there without spending big bucks on engineering.

I have the 2021 tlx type s.
Same color combination as you are testing. After 3 years, I must say that I love it.
I got it for 53000.

IMO this looks a bit better than the new 'Integra'

I think this car with the 2024 updates would’ve been perfect without that trackpad.

@Zygrene Thank you for your review. I'm a fan of your channel. One correction I want to point out is the 2023 TLX-S does not have wireless CarPlay. It is definitely wired. I am an owner of a 2023 TLX-S in Apex Blue Pearl w/ Orchid interior just like this one. Cheers!

I think this is the first video where I could truly see for myself that this car doesn’t have enough power for my tastes. 15 years ago Pontiac made the G8 GT .. 361hp, 385tq… and it ran similar if not identical 0-60 and 1/4 mile times as this TLX…

Curious to hear everyone's thoughts on this car vs Genesis G70, Kia Stinger, Audis S4/S5 and Cadillac CT-5 V (base V, non-Blackwing). They all occupy very similar price range new, and have very similar power/torque on paper.

Great review and I'm not criticizing it because you focus on the performance aspect of this car rather than the true purpose of the car. There are many online reviews of the tlx and I've noticed a strange pattern comparing this car to integras and other lines that are not luxury sedans. Why? Integra is a lower less prestigious line than tlx. This is a fast car but that's not it's purpose... This car is for professionals with families who want to look good, feel good, have a great daily driver that has practical features, and that has some higher end performance capabilities and interior features. If you want a race car for cheap, buy a civic type R or the Integra.

Stinger or G70 have better tuning potential, great power terrain warranty, reliable as well, rwd biased and you'll get slightly more power and more things. Like heated rear seats heat steering wheel, brembos on all 4 wheels instead of just front wheels, big moon roof, heads up display. In this competition no one beats the value and performance for the money of stinger/genesis. M340I faster but it cost more and you won't get all the things unless you pay extra. S4 great but reliability isn't there like VW and very expensive to maintain especially if you want to do everything yourself. Q50S is only 300 hp and outdated interior, reliability isn't there either.

Spec'ed out a 2024 BMW 440i xdrive gran coupe...extra for leather, NO power seats???? No ventilated seats. To get what you get in a TLX Type S, it was over $75K. S5 Sportback was also above $72k for the stuff you get in the Acura...both quicker, but for daily real world driving?? Come on...this is no contest. Acura is the best value and the AWD system is equal if not better than the Germans.
