Hey guys, Peter Griffin here to explain the joke:

Addis Ababa: Ethiopia's rapidly growing and developing capital city. Home to the headquarters of the African Union and the location of many Chinese infrastructure projects. Like most large cities in Ethiopia, it is very ethnically diverse.

Afar: Homeland of the nomadic Afar people and the location of the Danakil depression, one of the hottest places on Earth. The remains of Lucy, the 3.2 million year old female Australopithecus, were also discovered here.

Amhara: Homeland of the Amhara people, from which all but one of Ethiopia's emperors since 1270 had hailed. Known for its medieval castles and churches as well as its Christian culture. Though he was not a full ethnic Amhara himself, most of Haile Selassie's modern supporters, apologists and nostalgics are Amharas.

Benishangul-Gumuz: A small region located right beside the Sudanese and South Sudanese borders. Several border skirmishes between Sudan and Amhara militias have taken place on the Sudanese side of the border.

Central Ethiopia: A small region in the heart of Ethiopia in which most Gurage people, a Semitic-speaking ethnic group closely related to e.g. Amharas and Argobbas, live. They love their spicy raw beef-based dishes like kitfo.

Dire Dawa: One of Ethiopia's two so-called "chartered cities", the other one being Addis Ababa. Most of the city's residents are Muslims, either Oromo or Somali. It also functions as an important stop along the Ethio-Djibouti Railway, which connects Addis Ababa with Djibouti City.

Gambela: A relatively small region near the South Sudanese border. Home to various Nilotic peoples, who are known for their dark skin and extreme height.

Harari: Ethiopia's smallest "region" by far. The city of Harar is known for its countless mosques, its old city walls (built to help repel Oromo invasions), its ethnic diversity and a vibrant open market. Prior to 1887, the Emirate of Harar was an independent country, until it was conquered and annexed by Emperor Menelik II.

Oromia: Ethiopia's largest, most populous, and probably also most grotesquely shaped region. Homeland of the Oromo people, who have been Ethiopia's largest ethnic group since around the late 20th century. It is also said that coffee was first consumed and cultivated by humans in what is now Oromia. The OLF ("Oromo Liberation Front"), an Oromo separatist paramilitary group known to e.g. kidnap innocent individuals (especially non-Oromos) is also active here.

Sidama: Another rather small (and young) region in southern Ethiopia. The majority of its inhabitants are ethnic Sidamas, a Cushitic-speaking ethnic group closely related to Oromos and such. Its capital is Awassa (absolutely worth visiting :P)

Somali: A large, dry, and sparsely populated region in eastern Ethiopia. As its name suggests, many ethnic Somalis, who are native to the area, reside there. Somali nationalists from Somalia and the Somali Region alike often express a desire for the region to be annexed into Somalia.

South Ethiopia: Yet another young region that split off from the SNNPR. Homeland of the Omotic-speaking Wolayta people. Its capital of Arba Minch is known for its springs and resorts.

South West Ethiopia: Similar to above. This is where the Omo Valley, which is home to those lip plate people (the Mursi), is located. No noteworthy cities.

Tigray: Ethiopia's only contemporary region which (more or less) already existed as a province before the introduction of ethnofederalism in the 1990s. Some of Ethiopia's most ancient cultural sites, such as the obelisks of Axum, the monastery of Debre Damo or the Sabaean temple at Yeha are located here. Many ethnic Tigrayans were killed or displaced in the recent Tigray War (2020 - 2022).
