A story that always stayed with me for years was one about 3 German prisoners of war in Britain during WW2. They had a very good grasp of the English language even down to the accent. With fake papers they made it quite a way across the country. However one checkpoint, a guard was suspicious of them and as they were leaving he said “Viel Glück” in German, one of the pows instinctively replied “Vielen Dank” without thinking and they were subsequently arrested again.

During WW I, German agents were able to sabotage 'Black Tom' on the waterfront of Jersey City, NJ, blowing up a major ammunition depot for loading from trains to ships for Europe.
There were a number of German-American Bund meeting halls, and in rural areas camps around NY City, Chicago and other cities. One of the largest camps was in Andover, NJ. It was raided by the FBI with the local Sussex Co. Sheriff's office, the property seized by the Federal government and later became and still is a recreation facility, including a large building built by the Bund.
Due to fears from Germany developing a long range bomber, some manufacturing plants that made war goods were disguised. An example was a Curtiss-Wright aircraft engine plant built in Wood-Ridge, NJ as their Paterson, NJ plant was too small and the new facility was along a still exiting major railroad tracks (2 track) that carries freight and commuter trains. The building is huge partially built underground and during the war it was covered in grass and other landscaping.
