The "yes but" is for YouTube shorts, the video is supposed to loop back to "how do I get a job in design" right afterwards :)

When it comes to job hunting, I've had both ends of the spectrum :
- On one hand I've spend months (almost a year) looking for a job and being met with an endless barrage of "your work is great but..." or "We would totally hire you but..."
- And on the other hand, I just got a job as an Art Director : Applied on monday, interview on tuesday, hired the next day. Kinda sureal. But it's the kind of world we live in now.
It's kind of like falling in love, it always happen when you least expect it.
But in both cases a solid portfolio was key to at least get a chance at an interview.
Good luck out there to all my fellow jobseekers. I know it's tough. You're allowed to doubt. But don't give up.

I hire great designers all the time. All I want is for you to show up on-time and do the job you were hired to do. No fancy letter, no avatars, just show up and design.

Damn, how many likes do you want from us to post the rest.

So in essence, the first step is to have a GOOD PORTFOLIO before you even think of getting a design job. Got it

Im guessing that the community manager doesn't talk day by day with HR about the comments he/shee sees on the company's social media posts. You should interact with people of HR through linkedin or idk target their social media accounts with ads of your portfolio. Especially to the ones that have the label "hiring" on their LinkedIn profile picture

Chris gave the best tips. Engaging with the targeted companies is so important. That will help you build a connection prior to writing the "love letter". 👍😉

"Companies do not hire the best option, they hire the least risky opton." - words of a bald sage, and confirmed through my own experience. This short was just another way of saying it.

The unfortunate dirty little secret about graphic design and advertising that doesn't get talked about enough is the racism, sexism and ageism. Old white men at the top in the CD and management positions, women only hiring other women, and if you're over 40, sorry.

this is such useless basic information, and futur does so well explaining nothing substantial

Or maybe just give them a call? 🤷‍♂️. Doing all this is nonsense

Yes but...? For me personally, I had to leave my native hometown in san diego, california to find my first design job here in Houston, Texas. I was told by other designers on a reddit post that I had created, that the market in LA/SD is saturated and very competitive. I'm not saying you can't find a job out there it's possible. But it seems to be based more on who you know rather than what your portfolio looks like. After countless rejections, and one interview through zoom that I had with a company in LA (Which I later found they decided to move forward with someone else), I decided to pack my bags and venture out of state.

I need to be honest - I left the design industry because it’s an absolutely abhorrent industry to work in. Leaving graphic design was the best thing I ever did. I’ve never looked back.

Here in the U.K. it’s full of stuck up self righteous art directors, creative directors and designers who think they’re a big deal. The constant requirement to justify your work to not only clients but to these creative directors as well.

They’re nearly always the stereotype as well, avocado on toast eating wanky twats who only drink coffee from these new age industrial coffee shacks with tin roofs.

It’s absolutely soul destroying, and for what? On top of this you find that a large percentage of clients don’t appreciate what you’ve done or follow your suggestions and guidelines to looking after their new identity to maintain consistency.

And by the way, I was a really good designer and came a long way.

My advice? Run, run as fast as you can. It’s a trap!
