Dialysis Catheter Solutions
Guess what?
Your Dialysis catheter doesn't work.
Again.
You try flushing the lines, reversing the lines, slowing the pump speed, repositioning your patient.
And this doesn't work.
And the machine won't stop alarms.
And your patient is starting to feel sick.
Now what do you do with the non functioning dialysis catheter?
Follow your facility protocol.
And hopefully that protocol tells you to try TPA.
Even if you don't think it's a TPA problem.
Especially if TPA hasn't been given in awhile.
Or call your provider and they might recommend TPA.
If it's at the start of treatment we will let TPA dwell in the lines for 30 minutes.
Remove the TPA and restart the treatment.
Sometimes the dialysis catheter still won't work with these interventions.
So then they might need a catheter exchange.
