How do you connect the dialysis catheter? Do the colors really matter. The colors on the dialysis catheter don't matter. Your patient will still get great dialysis.
Put when disconnecting the colors of the dialysis tubing does matter.
You don't want to rinse the blood back backwards....Then the patient's blood will end up in the saline bag.
On the dialysis machine, the red line always pulls, and the blue line always returns.
On the dialysis catheter, the blood is returned and taken from the same location, just different lumens.
One lumen might pull better than the other.
Sometime the catheter needs TPA.
Always Check your facility protocol.

I thought the arterial and venous lines do different things. Like arteries carry blood away and venous carries blood to heart. How is that safe to reverse them?

Studies do show that reversing the lines can cause about a 25% recirculation, so be mindful that if you are needing to reverse your lines you may end up with a lower kt/v. You would have to consider either switching out the line, adjusting the BFR, adjusting the DFR, or adjusting their dialyzer size.
