I started a gift shop February 2024. I have 254 listings and have made a few sales. The more I work in my shop, the more I feel I want to focus more on a niche. At this point I don't know if I should stay the course or niche down. I've been loving designing mugs, I know that's a very popular area though

I wish you’d spoken to me when you were looking for a general store since that is definitely what I have. I’ve been selling on Etsy since 2010 and have less than 200 items for sale. I started with custom made silver jewelry, and have over the years sold linocut prints, watercolor paintings and prints, digital prints, resin trinket trays, etchings, digital downloads of various different products, phone wallpapers, stickers, Samsung Frame TV art, and until recently when I had a big purge, many different POD products from mugs to t-shirts, jigsaw puzzles, metal signs, playing cards, Apple Watch bands, you name it. Now ask me how well I’ve done. Quite shite, really. Sure I have a handful of regular sellers but I realized way too late that generalizing was NOT the way to go. I will now be opening a new store very soon with what I think is a potentially good product and will ONLY be selling that product. Wish me luck.

I sell a bit of everything in my Etsy store, vintage items, sewing patterns, jewelry, crocheted items, fabrics, although I’d say 95% are sewn items from my sewing studio. Sewn items include whatever one can sew, coasters, aprons, room shoes, book sleeves and so forth. 80% of those sewn items are bags and purses. Should I cut down the variety of items and focus on certain items only? I’m not doing too bad but definitely there’s room for improvement.

Hey Nick, great video again. Could you give an example of a digital niche and sub niches? I have some trouble coming up with niches and sub niches in the context of a digital store.

Agreed it needs to be more general and year-round but it can still be around the same theme or type of product! I’m selling only clothing that I iron on HTV - and almost all being the glow in the dark, metallic, glitter, or printable kind - and a little bit of rhinestone but keeping it mostly to music concert and cat-themed plus with each season and major holidays.

Jewellery would fall under the category of a product store rather than a specific niche. Examples of niches could include Bass Fishing, Teacher Gifts, Gardening, and so on. However, a jewellery store is generally considered a broader product category, unless you choose to specialise in a specific niche such as 'Gothic Jewellery' or 'Minimalist Jewellery.'

Question regarding categories/sections when setting up an Etsy niche store. If you have multiple sections of your niche, is there a way to add multiple subsections under each of these main section categories? For example - a niche of digital art. Categories might include sections for professions, cars, fishing, sports, etc. Is there a way to list multiple areas under each one of these for example under sports - further sections would drill out to baseball and hockey and golf, etc, etc.

So I have a store on Etsy selling dog blankets, bandanas. My question is…. I want to add T-shirts, hoodies (for humans) with dog slogans, can I add them to my dog bed/accessories store, or should I open another store for people dog related clothing? TIA
