Tiger Logistics: How to feed a German Cat

Logistics of the Tiger Battalions or how to feed your cat. We all know that the Panzerkampfwagen VI Ausführung E was a high-maintenance cat, yet, how much actually? For this we look at fuel consumption and the sources here differ widely. We also compare the Tiger’s values to that of the Panzerkampfwagen IV Ausführung H. For data we look at the British reports on Tiger 131, German sources, Jentz & Doyle, Friedli and other authors as well. Of course, we also look at the Tiger Fibel (Tiger Primer), since it contains some interesting aspects as well, particularly when it comes to armor and oil.

For the entire 32 years I have walked this earth my father has jokingly called them "galleons" of gas. I didn't even notice you saying it until the second time. X)
Thanks for the video. I just finished my senior baccalaureate paper and the subject was a comparison of Axis and Allied logistics in Africa and the Western Front. I love examining logistics and you are one of the few who dares to make videos of it. Thank you!

German cats also need a lot of living space.

Interesting fact.
T-34/85 with DIESEL engine and with 545 L of diesel, could travel 250 km on road.
So if the Tiger could travel 200 km with 540 L of benzin, that was awesome.

Do this on a modern car, you will be surprised, what the manual says and what you actually consume.
My A4 quattro 140kw diesel is advertised with 4, 8 l/100km, reallity on economy mode is 6, 1 l/100 km.
I know a lot of factors to consider.

You can play the John Tiller's Panzer Campaign games (going on sale in July '20) that include "Explicit supply rules" to get a sense of the issue during the campaigns they were used in such engagements as the third battle of Kharkov (John Tiller's game: Kharkov '43).

Gasoline in the 2000’s is much better quality then in WW2 Germany.

Just feed it with 1 Sherman a day and you will be good to go

Very good analysis, glad to see the quality of your videos increasing even further.
Also, thanks for captioning your recent videos

I enjoy these types of videos to much. Its always something I wondered too, how much could a tiger really advance before runnign out of fuel.

I would love to see a video of a parts breakdown. It would be most interesting to see what part generally needed replacing the most. It would give a great indication at a very technical leve of what the main failure point of the Tiger was. Was it a specif bearing or gear or disk that failed the most?

lack of logistic and intlligence is probably because ww1 was a static war and very close to Germany or even inside. Like, 300 km from Berlin.

Soviets did fight Japaneese in Mongolia - 800 km to the nearest train station. All should be carried by cars.
Zhukov prased logistic guys in his book.

Engines in the past could vary quite a lot between different examples.

Hey MHV, I wanna suggest a video on oil in WW2. Ive heard a lot of documentaries pointing to the lack of oil being the greatest disadvantage the axis had, especially Germany. Some documentaries seem to suggest that it was one of the big motivations behind Barbarossa (also I’ve always heard the Germans bought soviet oil before then but haven’t found any details on this) I’d love a full exploration of just how bad the oil problems were and was it an influence on the Reich to advance in the south in ‘42.

You know what really kind of blows my mind?

Think about just how few armoured vehicles the Germans had over all and how many they had to destroy themselves when they ran out of fuel vs how many they destroyed.

Thank god they had no fuel reserves right?

Perhaps such wildly inconsistent numbers are due to inconsistent engineering, fuel and maintenance, Germany had an extreme fuel shortage

I'd love an extended series on AFV logistics for the Wehrmacht.
