"Brake pads can be easily replaced." says Kelsey. "Eat me flyboy" says the Technician lugging the 500 pound wheel off the jet x 18 for 747.

I live in a tropical country, where brake overheating and engine performance drop are both huge issues.
Our pilots always use reversers, and if they really blew something from the runway and damaged the engine, I think they'd just sue the airport for failing to maintain good FOD removal.

I really love this channel. Kelsey has a great sense of humor. Greatings from a Brazilian fan.

I made thrust reversers for Rolls Royce trent engines. Made molds, tooling and tool paths, best and last job I ever had.

In Canada, I find the runway condition (CRFI) effect which they use more. You don't wanna just slam the brakes on an icy runway.

Back in the 1900's I few on 727's frequently, which had tail mounted engines and the other kind of thrust reversers. Seems they seem to use those for reversing away from the gate much more often. I thought it was so cool when they did that.

I do cad work, for a living. My first job in the field was at a place that did GE Aviation contract work. It was pretty cool. We used NX and Teamcenter software. I was specifically on the Installations team, so I worked on the test installations, like the equipment GE used to test their jet engines. Some examples of the tests are "bird strike tests" and "fan blade out tests". The first one involved the jet engines getting started, and having dead birds flung into them, and the other had explosives put on one of the fan blades, so they could destroy it while the engine was running, and see how it reacted.

That work was so stressful; I had to work so many hours for little pay. It was kinda cool, just to do that kind of work, but at the same time, I really don't miss the stress. I still do cad work, but it's just way more laid back where I work now.

I have seen the tail mounted engines used for reversing from the gate. Saves time and use of a tug.

Kelsey, if you are ever going to do more Hollywood vs Reality episodes, i suggest the Airport series. Maybe a mega montage of them. First one is fairly realistic. Second was a little more farfetched, but maybe a tiny bit believable. Third is kind of stupid, and the fourth (The Concorde) is hilariously dumb. I doubled over in laughter at one part in fourth film.

Thanks for the full explanation. Even though i have never witnessed them in use, i always assumed this must be how it worked. Now thanks to you, I now know.

Used to also be used for reversing the aircraft. No used anymore in the civilian world, the military does still do it sometimes

Some airlines have SOP to deploy the reversers but leave the engines at idle power unless needed. Thrust reverser repairs/overhauls are far more expensive than brake replacements.

I love that Kelsey's doing short, I hope this will continue! Yay! Love the lessons, too, of course! ❤

I find they use them every single time here at our airport the best is when it’s raining

On modern airliners it’s tough to talk about thrust reverses without talking about autobrakes. When you set the autobrakes as part of your approach briefing that is telling the airplane what deceleration rate and stopping distance you want. The autobrakes can do it all for you with wheel brakes or you can help the airplane out by applying thrust reverse. The deceleration rate and stopping distance remain the same with the addition of reverse but the wheel brakes are doing less work and therefore getting less hot. If you are doing a quick turn and the brakes are still throwing caution messages because they overheated, you can’t take off. If you do a rejected takeoff with brakes that are already hot they will almost certainly catch fire.

Still love ya, but most of us still really appreciate your long form videos too.
Stay safe an happy. That was a good short form to bring new people in, so well done dear Kelse'y

Better than throwing an anchor out the back. Saves the runway from damage. And parachutes gotta be re packed. Keeps the pilot happier . WOAH BUGGY!!
